On Wednesday, September 4th, staff for Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) presented medals to the family of the late James Helling, an Iowa veteran who served during WWII in the United States Coast Guard.

James enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in November 1943. He served throughout the World during his time with the Coast Guard and earned many awards and decorations. He was released from duty in August 1945. James also enlisted in the United States Army in December 1948 and was honorably discharged in April 1949.

In the course of James’s distinguished wartime service with the United States Coast Guard, James earned six medals and decorations. They included: Merchant Marine Emblem, Atlantic War Zone Bar and Medal, Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Bar and Medal, Pacific War Zone Bar and Medal, Victory Medal and Bar, and Honorable Service Button.
