Madeline McMullen has been selected as the 2013 DAR Good Citizen of Roland-Story High School. She is the daughter of Robert and Valerie McMullen of Roland. Madeline is the Secretary for the National Honor Society, serves on the Student Council and received an Academic Letter.
She was on the Cross County team and is active in the band and vocal music programs. She received the honor of being the 2A Outstanding Performer in the State Jazz band Contest. She has participated in high school and community productions. One of her achievements has been a service program in her community to provide scarves, hats and mittens to a Ukraine home for orphaned and mentally disabled children. Her future plans are to be in elementary education and be a guidance counselor.
In her contest essay, Madeline wrote: "Our freedoms have never really changed, we have… we’ve used what our founding fathers have given us - the freedom to change and the responsibility to improve our environment for the future, while remembering the past… We need to use our freedoms to change ourselves first, in order to change our country for the better."
Sun Dial Chapter, Ames, sponsors the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen program to hone a graduating senior who is outstanding in leadership, service, dependability and who is patriotic. Madeline received a pin and certificate, poster and a wallet card for participating in the contest.
