A violent wind and rainstorm hit Roland and much of central Iowa on Friday of the last week of June causing much property and crop damage. In this area, two barns were reported destroyed as well as a single corn crib and hundreds of turkeys.

The Roland Intermediate Girl Scout troop enjoyed a camping trip, June 13 to 26, at Pike Lake State Park near Eldora.

A group of 12 Roland men met Tuesday, July 2, for the purpose of organizing a civil defense group here. The group will be available to assist local authorities in the event of a local emergency, such as fires, storms, and need for first aid.

Big Bertha, a giant four-ton elephant, will entertain with the Fairyland Circus, coming to Roland July 16.

DeKalb Agricultural Association owners of the former Ames-In-Cross hatchery and breeding operation in Roland, will increase their operations here, according to Orris Osheim, geneticist. The company has purchased 11 acres of land adjoining their Roland property and will build two large brooder houses there this summer.

Notice to Dog Owners! The Mayor and Council have proclaimed a 30-day dog tie-up starting July 15 through and including Aug. 14, 1963.

At Severson Royal Blue Food Store, Peanut Butter is selling for 39 cents; Starkist Tuna, 29 cents; Jell-O, 3 boxes for 27 cents; Folger’s coffee, 3 lbs. for $1.79.

Riverside Bible Camp will observe its 20th anniversary on Sunday, July 21. The main feature will be the message by Dr. J,.L. Knutson, President of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. Rev. A.J. Bringle, who began his work as Director of the camp on May 1st, will be installed by one of the officers of the Camp Association.

The Daily newspapers recently carried stories of a Vinton, Iowa farmer, Keith Elwick, who met England’s Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip at the Royal Farm Show near London. Elwick, the nephew of Lester Severson of Roland, returned home from England shortly after the event. While in England, Elwick was awarded two prizes for a manure spreader which he displayed at the Royal Farm Show.

Myron Pickering, who has been in the electrical business in Roland for the past year and a half, has quit business and taken employment with Nelson Electric Company at Ames.

Iowa will have a 75 percent eclipse of the sun on Saturday, July 20, between the hours of 2:17 and 4:41 p.m. Viewers are reminded not to look directly at the eclipse, but to be safe, to watch the eclipse on television.

Little League All-Stars will play the League Champion Co-op team on July 30, at Erickson Park. Admission is 25 cents for adults and 10 cents for children. The junior girls’ team will play Stanhope following the Little League game.

Harvey Chance of Grimes has been hired by town officials as town electrician. He succeeds Paul Sondall who resigned to accept a job with Firestone Company in Des Moines.

Airman Paul Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Anderson, recently received a promotion to the grade of Airman Second Class. Anderson is a member of the 327th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron which is responsible for maintaining the F-102 supersonic fighter interceptors.
