This summer the Story City Antique Carousel will be celebrating 35 years of being in North Park. In 1976 after years of being a traveling carousel and prolonged exposure to the elements the carousel was retired. Four short years later there was a renewed interest in the carousel and restoration began along with construction of a permanent building to protect the carousel. In 1982, the Story City Antique Carousel reopened within its new home.
To celebrate, this summer we are expanding our novelty area. We have a limited addition 35 years T-shirts for all ages, postcards, tote bags, blankets, magnets, buttons, notecards designed by Kaitlin Romsey, and a coloring books designed by Molly Nagel. As always it is only $1 to ride but this year we are adding a Gold Card punch pass that will get you 35 Rides for $25, that is 10 FREE rides. We also will be having parties throughout the summer, a celebration for National Carousel Days, and even a business after hours. This summer is going to be all fun all the time down at the Carousel.
Not only are we celebrating the last 35 years but we are hoping to recapture that renewed energy in our carousel that was seen by local residence and visitors all those years ago. The Carousel is undoubtedly Story City’s top tourist attraction. Every year the carousel sees between 15,000 to 20,000 riders from all 50 states and from around the world.
To accomplish and create the best experience for visitors and locals who ride the carousel we could use some help. How you may ask? By volunteering! Since the carousel is owned by the Greater Chamber Connection a 501c3 non-profit we rely on volunteers to assist in the operation and maintenance of this beautiful machine and we would love to get some assistance from new volunteers, our dedicated volunteers, and even volunteers who haven’t been able to help for a while.
To sign-up to be a volunteer with us visit our website at storycity.net click The Carousel tab and scroll down to “volunteer with us” and click the link or give us a call at 515-733-4214 and we can get you signed up for dates you are able to volunteer. Let’s have some fun and go for a ride this summer at the Carousel. Opening weekend is May 6!
