Poppy Proclamation

Whereas, America is the land of freedom, preserved and protected willingly and freely by citizen soldiers; and

Whereas, the red poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in all wars, and represents the hope that none have died in vain; and

Whereas, the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy has continued to bloom for the casualties of war, reminding America each year that the men and women who have served and died for their country deserve to be remembered; and

Whereas, since it began in 1921, Poppy Day has become a familiar tradition in almost every American community, with the distribution of the bright red memorial flower to the public being one of the oldest and most widely-recognized programs of the American Legion Auxiliary;

Now therefore, I, Mike Jensen, Mayor of the city of Story City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May, 2017 as Poppy Month and urge that all citizens pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom by wearing the Memorial Poppy during this month.
