Dianne Swenson opened the meeting on June 20 at 6:45 p.m. with 12 members present. Trish Swanson and Betty Martin presented our colors. Our POW/MIA sash was draped on a chair in memory of those soldiers. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

President Dianne Swenson gave a prayer and we sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

The Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion Auxiliary was recited.

Officer’s Reports:

Secretary’s Report: A roll call was given. The minutes from the May 16 meeting were read by Angie Schnurstein. Trish Swanson made a motion to approve the minutes and it was seconded by Jackie Stockdale.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer, Virginia Swenson, shared our current balance. Bev Christenson made a motion and Mary Beck seconded the motion to approve the treasurer’s report.

Committee Reports:

Americanism: Virginia Swenson attended the awards ceremony at the Roland-Story Middle School for the Gettysburg Address contest and presented a $50 check to Steven Berends. The Roland Auxiliary Unit gave a $50 check to Josie Hove. They also each received an American Flag from their respective town’s Legion.

Membership: Our current membership is 47 members. We met our goal for this fiscal year, which was 44 members.

Junior report: Angie Schnurstein read a report from Emma Schnurstein on her experience from attending Junior Auxiliary camp that she attended in Newton from June 4-9th, 2017. She had a great time and learned a lot. Her scrapbook was passed around, along with three different patriotic crafts that she made.

Girls State: Our Girls State representative is Anika DeWald. This week she is currently attending Girls State in Des Moines at Drake University. An article was printed in the Story City Herald about her attending. We will ask her to share about her experience at one of our fall meetings.

Poppy: Thank you to everyone that helped the first Saturday in May handing out poppies and taking donations. Thank you also to the businesses in town that let us put out donation cans and poppies.

Unfinished Business included: Items were brought to be donated to the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown. President Dianne Swenson will be taking these items over this week. Thank you to everyone that helped with the bake sale during the BINGO event at the Legion. $129.25 was raised to help the Legion purchase chairs. Dianne Swenson, Tammy and Stan Hyer and Donna Roberts completed the quilt top for the Quilt of Valor. We all got a chance to see the quilt top and matching pillow case at the meeting.

New Business included: Nicole Clapp, from Gladbrook, will be running for the National Auxiliary President for 2019-2020. She sent us a letter announcing her running for office and asking for a monetary donation. We tabled it for now.

Dianne Swenson handed out a gift to each officer for the past year and we also presented her with a gift too.

Virginia Swenson made a motion to remove Beverly Korab’s name for Assistant Sargent at Arms and replace it with and Betty Martin’s name. Glenda Mathre seconded the motion and it was approved.

Tammy Hyer led our installation of officers. Our new officers for the 2017-2018 year include: President, Dianne Swenson; 1st Vice President, Glenda Mathre; 2nd Vice President, Virginia Swenson; Secretary, Angela Schnurstein; Treasurer, Virginia Swenson; Historian, Virginia Swenson; Chaplain, Glenda Mathre and Emma Schnurstein; Sgt. at Arms, Trish Swanson; Asst. Sgt. at Arms, Betty Martin; Reporter, Angela Schnurstein.

Announcements: The Legion has been having BINGO with Taco night, every other week. The next taco and BINGO night will be June 28, 2017. Thank you to those that attended the Memorial Day services and brought food to the Legion for lunch. The next leadership conference will be August 11 and 12, 2017, in Des Moines, at an area Legion Post from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
