The Story City Antique Carousel has one message for the community and surrounding areas — a big thank you and that summer is not over yet. Summer of 2017 has been full of successful events such as Scandinavian Days and National Carousel Day.
“Hundreds of people showed up to celebrate National Carousel Day on July 25, more than we ever anticipated,” said Abby Huff, GCC Executive Director. “We planned a fun, affordable evening celebration and families and extended families responded.”
Summer 2017 has also seen an increase in memorial contributions to the Carousel.
“Memorial gifts, donations and corporate gifts are so vital to the ongoing improvements being made to our facilities and electrical system. Many projects are in the works and it will be exciting to see them move forward, ” Karen Hermanson, GCC board member commented.
The City of Story City will also begin North Park improvements, which will include the area surrounding the carousel this fall with completion in spring of 2018.
But summer is not over, at least for most of the Carousel’s youngest riders.
“Nothing replaces the look on a child’s face as they spend time having fun with Mom or Dad or a grandma at the Carousel” Hermanson noted.
While many adults are thinking ahead to fall and back to school shopping, the Carousel has a continued need for volunteers to keep operating. The Carousel will continue to be open noon daily through Aug. 15.
“While we have enjoyed volunteers from not only Story City but the surrounding communities this summer, we always have a shortage in mid-August through September that is tough to fill. Aug. 9-15 is the current most urgent need, both afternoons and evenings,” Hermanson commented. “I encourage people to try a two-hour shift and sign up.”
From Aug. 16-Sept. 30, the carousel operates its fall schedule: Saturdays and Sundays (and Labor Day) from noon to 6 p.m.
