Story County Treasurer Renee M. Twedt would like to remind Story County property owners that the first half of the fiscal 2017-2018 property taxes are due on or before Sept. 30. A penalty of 1.5 percent attaches Oct. 3.

Property tax statements were mailed out in August 2017. By law, all property owners are mailed a tax statement — even if they pay taxes through an escrow account. Property owners who pay taxes through escrow accounts or other third-party arrangements can consider the tax statement FYI. Anyone with doubts about their property tax obligation should check with their bank or mortgage company, or call the treasurer’s office at 515-382-7330.

Mailed payments must be post marked on or before Sept. 30. Remember dropping it in the mail box does not guarantee a postmark. It is very important that the payment coupon from the property tax statement accompany all payments.

Paying online only costs 40 cents when you pay by e-check. That cost is less than a postage stamp.

The treasurer’s office is pleased to offer payments by Discover Card, MasterCard and Visa or debit card in its office as well as online at www.iowatreasurers.org. Additional fees will apply, but users will know the fee before agreeing to the payment. Other websites with useful information for Story County property owners include www.storyassessor.org and www.storycountyiowa.gov.

For residents’ convenience, the treasurer’s office has added a drop-off box attached to the wall at the entrance of the treasurer’s office. Also, there is the outdoor drop box outside the Administration Building at 900 Sixth St., Nevada. However payments placed in this drop box after Sept. 30 will incur a penalty.

For more information, call the treasurer’s office at 515-382-7330 or visit its websites at www.storycountyiowa.gov and www.iowatreasurers.org.
