Glow in the Dark Party at the Carousel
Come say goodbye to the Carousel animals for the 2017 season at the Carousel’s Glow in the Dark Party on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 7-9 p.m. Unlimited rides and glow in the dark items will be available. The cost is $5.
NHS food drive at Carousel
On Saturday, Sept. 30, the Roland-Story National Honor Society will be hosting a food drive benefiting the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry from noon-6 p.m. at the Story City Antique Carousel in Story City’s North Park. Bring a nonperishable food item to the Carousel and receive a free ride. North Park is under construction but the Carousel is open during its regular Saturday hours.
The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry is an entirely volunteer operated organization located in Story City that helps stock the shelves of those in Story City, Roland and Gilbert who are in need of food assistance. In addition, the pantry also operates from donations (monetary and non-perishable food) from community members. They also work closely with the Food Bank of Iowa, Harlan’s grocery store and other area businesses to keep the shelves stocked. Loaves and Fishes is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, and patrons are able to come one Saturday per month to receive food.
4-H food drive
The Roland-Story LTS (Loyal, Trustworthy, Service) 4-H club is manning a food drive in Roland in the coming weeks. On Saturday, Sept. 30, Roland residents can expect a note on their front doors with this announcement. The kids will pick up of donated items on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 4 p.m. Please leave your donations on your front porch/steps or somewhere visible from the road. The donations will benefit the Roland-Middle School food pantry for families in need.
Story City Hunger Fight
The third-annual Story City Hunger Fight will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Story City Recreation Center, 812 Elm Ave. The packaging shifts run from 11 a.m. to noon and 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. The goal is to “Pack the Truck” with 60,000 meals and raise $12,000. The event is sponsored by the Roland-Story Ministerial Association in conjunction with Meals from the Heartland. Twedt to speak at Roland Historical event
The Roland Historical Society will host a presentation featuring local historian, Arlen Twedt, as guest speaker on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Roland Area Community Center. As guest speaker for the evening, Twedt will talk about how central Iowa became the third most popular settlement area for Norwegian immigrants in Iowa. The event is free and open to the public.
Professional jouster to visit the Roland Library
Have you ever wondered what it was like to wear armor back in the day? Puppeteer Kevin Coble of the Jester Puppets knows well, he used to be a professional jouster! Kevin will be bringing his armor and gear to the Roland Public Library on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m. to present the early out program “Age of Chivalry.” This program will include many visuals, interesting facts, stories and even some hands on time with the equipment. Anyone from kindergarten age to old age that is interested in the days of chivalry are invited to attend this free program. No registration is necessary. This program is made possible through a grant from the United Way of Story County.
Sign up by Friday for citywide garage sales
The Story City Greater Chamber Connection is organizing a Fall Citywide Garage Sale and Business Crazy Days Sale on Friday, Oct. 13, and Saturday, Oct. 14. Story City American Legion #59 is hosting Taco Night tonight from 5:30-7 p.m. Walking tacos are $2, and soft-shell and hard-shell tacos are $1.50.
The Roland-Story football team is holding a pancake breakfast on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9-11 a.m. at Harvest E-Free Church. Free-will donations will be accepted.
Punt, Pass, Kick
A Punt, Pass and Kick competition will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at 9 a.m. at the high school football field. The event is sponsored by Gookin Ford and Cyclone Awards & Engraving.
On Friday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m., at the Story City Community Center people age 55 and over are invited to play bridge club and/or the card game “Hand and Foot.” No reservations or charge required, but a snack to share is appreciated.
On Wednesday, Oct. 4, a Fellowship Luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. at the Story City Community Center. The cost is $4 per person age 55 and over. Menus can be picked up at the community center. Reservations can be made by calling Ruby Olson at 515-733-9278.
The acclaimed mystery/drama “Wind River” will be shown this Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Sept. 29, 30, Oct. 30, at the Story Theater in Story City. Showtimes are evenings at 7 p.m., with special matinees Saturday and Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Admission is only $4 and it’s rated R.
