• Mrs. D-Ferrell’s Communications Lab 10 has begun their journey with the short story. Students are expected to understand the elements of literature and identify those elements. They are also working on improving vocabulary acquisition and writing techniques.

• The elementary school is collecting Gatorade for our fire fighters. They will be sharing with the Roland and Story City Fire Fighters during Fire Safety week. Mrs. Phelan’s class is collecting from each classroom every morning until the 13th of October. Last year they collected over 1,000 bottles to donate. This year they are hoping to beat our record. If you would like to donate, donations can be dropped off at the elementary school.

• On Wednesday, Oct. 4, fourth-grade students and all middle school students participated in Iowa’s Healthy State Walk (or as we like to call it, a NorseStrong walk!). Mrs. Braathun is encouraging students to be healthy, and walking is one of the ways to do that. It was a beautiful day to enjoy the Iowa fall and a great way to start the day!

• Mrs. Brouwer’s child development students sang “Ring Around the Rosie” as they researched the purpose and history of nursery rhymes! Students concluded that the lyrics of common songs are rooted in historical events that may not have the most cheerful connotation when analyzed word by word. Students also looked at what a child would learn from nursery rhymes and the developmental benefits.

• The Elementary School’s Character Counts! Kickoff Assembly was held on Sept. 26, with Mr. Toby of the Leader Seeder. He talked with students about making good choices that help them to become leaders of good character! Thank you to the PTO for funding this.
