Downtown Trick or Treating
Story City will hold its Downtown Trick or Treating on Thursday, Oct. 26, 5 to 7 p.m. The event includes a business costume contest, with trick or treaters voting for their favorite costume at the GCC office. The first 250 trick or treaters will receive a free trick or treat bag at the GCC office. Pet trick or treat will be at Heartland Pet Hospital. See their Facebook page to enter your pet in their Pet Costume Contest. The firefighters will have a special treat, and the first responders will serve hot dogs.
Monster Mash on Main
The Roland Public Library is hosting a Monster Mash on Main event prior to Beggar's Night in Roland. Monday, Oct. 30, from 5 to 6 p.m., the library will be serving a free hot dog dinner. There will be games and treat bags. A sidewalk parade will be held at 5:45 p.m. for everyone in costume. Pets are welcome!

Pumpkin and gourd decorating contest
Bring your very best decorated pumpkin or gourd to the Roland Library and enter it in the Pumpkin and Gourd Contest! Pumpkins may be dropped off between now and the deadline, which is Friday, Oct. 27. No carved pumpkins please! Age groups will be 5 and under, 6-10 years, and 11 and up. Winners will be announced at the Monster Mash on Oct. 30. For more information, contact the library at 515-388-4086.
Haunted High School
Roland-Story students are holding a Haunted High School on Saturday, Oct. 28. Trick or treating for children age 10 and under will be from 6 to 7 p.m. The scary part will be from 8 to 10 p.m. for adults and kids 10 and over. Admission is $5; proceeds will be donated to Bliss Cancer Center and Judge Story Theatrical Troupe.
The Story City American Legion will host a Halloween Party Costume Contest on Saturday, Oct. 28, starting at 11 p.m.
Scout Pack 101 and the Story City American Legion Post 59 invite the public to a Harvest Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Legion Hall, 301 Washington St. The menu will include biscuits and gravy, pancakes, scrambled eggs, and sausage. Free-will donations will be accepted and will go to the local Scouts.
The Roland Public Library is hosting a Candidate Forum for the people who are on the ballot for the city election in Roland. All five candidates have been invited to participate in the forum, which will be held Sunday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. at the library. Running for Roland City Council are Jerry Balmer, Linda Gauley, Riley Larson and Danny Weston. Andy Webb is running unopposed for mayor. The audience at the forum will be able to hear the candidates share their vision of Roland and answer questions from moderator Roger Fritz regarding community matters. A meet-and-greet with the candidates will follow the one-hour forum. Prior to the event, residents are invited to submit questions for the candidates on the “City of Roland” Facebook page.
Best of Fall
The Best of Fall at Bergen will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, from 8 a.m. to noon at Bergen Lutheran Church, 101 W. Maple, Roland. There will be a Harvest Breakfast, turkey sandwiches to go, a bake sale and a craft sale. The cost is $6.
Monroe Crossing concert
Tickets are on sale now for the bluegrass group Monroe Crossing, which will perform Thursday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. at the Story City Grand Opera House. Tickets are $15 in advance or $25 at the door. The concert will benefit the Story Theater Historical Foundation. Tickets are available at the Story Theater. For more information, call 515-733-4551.
On Friday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m., at the Story City Community Center people age 55 and over are invited to play bridge club and/or the card game “Hand and Foot.” No reservations or charge required, but a snack to share is appreciated.
On Wednesday, Nov. 1, a Fellowship Luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. at the Story City Community Center. The cost is $4 per person age 55 and over. Menus can be picked up at the community center. Reservations can be made by calling Ruby Olson at 515-733-9278.
Tickets are on sale for Roland-Story High School's fall play, “Comic Book Artist.” Tickets are $5 and are available at the school. Showtimes are Nov. 10 and 11 at 7 p.m.
The animated hit “My Little Pony” will be shown this Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Oct. 27, 28, 29, at the Story Theater in Story City. Showtimes are evenings at 7 p.m., with special matinees Saturday and Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Admission is only $4 and it's rated PG.
