For Story City’s 32nd Annual Tour of Homes, Hook & Eye Questers is pleased to present the home of Megan and Tyler Frederiksen and their children, Owen, 4 ½, and Avery, 3 ½. This will be the second Christmas for the Frederiksens at 1218 Northridge Road, as they purchased their home in June, 2016. Tyler is a Broker/Agent for Norseman Realty and their slogan, ”Love where you live,” says it perfectly. This house was originally build by Duane Matson for his family in 1973, and the Matsons lived there for the first 10 years. The Frederiksens are the eighth owner.
This home has four levels and is decorated with many different themes. Megan said, “It’s not about creating one cohesive theme, it is more about family traditions and a home that says “love, joy and family.”
As you step inside the front door, you will find yourself in the dining room and kitchen. The dining room is decorated in silver and gold and all things that glitter. Across from the front door and behind the dining room table is an antique Ose Hardware wooden bin/cubby. It is great storage and can act as an impromptu buffet, sitting next to the dining room table. Megan found this piece in her Grandpa Kenny and Grandma JoAnn (Ose) Peterson’s garage. It was missing one drawer and had black marker descriptions on the fronts of the drawers before she rescued it, had a drawer made and painted it green.
The new kitchen, remodeled by Mike and Mary Ness just a couple of years ago, has a 12-foot granite island. The kitchen cabinets are white with a black island and the countertop is granite. Megan and Tyler have put their own touches on this great space. They changed the lighting above the kitchen island to beautiful Mercury glass pendants. They also changed the back splash to glass subway tile. Above the kitchen cabinets is displayed papier-mâché reindeer with evergreen garland. The kitchen has a large deck that overlooks the golf course. Next to the kitchen is a hallway going out to the garage and that is where the laundry room and more cabinets are located. Megan repainted much of the home using gray tones.
Next head upstairs to Owen’s room, the half-bath, and the Master bedroom. Owen’s room has a large Lego Christmas tree and a vintage Advent Calendar from Tyler’s Nana. Owen also has a teepee.
The master bedroom has a beautiful “Christmas” green wall behind the bed … or Kelly Green any other time of the year. There is a white Christmas tree in this room with white ornaments and glass icicles. The oak dresser to the side of the bed was Megan’s growing up. On the wall are two framed prints from their wedding … with signatures of guests and best wishes. Don’t forget to step into the lovely master bath.
As you head down the stairs from the kitchen to the first of two lower levels, you reach the living room which is decorated in traditional red and green. There is a small bar in the corner which Megan uses to hang the family stockings from the counter top. Tyler’s Nana handmade each stocking as family members were added to her family. The Christmas tree is this room will have a pickle hidden in its branches. This is a Danish tradition and finding the pickle means good luck for the coming year. This living room also walks out to a patio on the River Bend Golf Course.
Next to the living room is a bathroom and also Avery’s room. Pink and purple and everything little girl describes this room perfectly. Avery has her own stage and a wall full of costumes for her (and Owen) acting debuts. The quilt on her bed is from her great-great-great-grandmother. Avery also has a large dollhouse and a tree filled with lots of pink and purple too!
Heading down a few more steps to the lower level, you will find another living space — a bonus room, playroom or extra bedroom. Right now the Frederiksens use it for all these purposes with a loveseat, bed and play are too. The only other rooms on this floor are storage and utility.
For this 2017 Tour of Homes, Megan plans to make spritz cookies using grandma’s recipe, another Norwegian tradition, and something that reminds us that Christmas is all about Love, Joy and Family. Merry Christmas from the Frederiksens!
