Nov. 21, 2017: Dianne Swenson opened the meeting at 6:35pm with 11 members present. Trish Swanson and Betty Martin presented our colors. Our POW/MIA sash was draped on a chair in memory of those soldiers. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Chaplain Glenda Mathre gave a prayer.
The Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion Auxiliary was recited.
President’s Report: President Dianne Swenson handed out raffle tickets to all members present for a door prize for later.
Secretary’s Report: A roll call was given. The minutes from the October 17, 2017, meeting were read by Angie Schnurstein. Virginia Swenson made a motion to approve the minutes, as corrected, and it was seconded by Trish Swanson.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer, Virginia Swenson, shared that our current balance. Ann Lovig made a motion and Glenda Mathre seconded the motion to approve the treasurer’s report.
Membership: We have a new member, Clara Wendt, transferring from Roland. Our current membership is 36 members so far this fiscal year. Our membership goal is 47 members.
Scholarship: Angie Schnurstein will update our scholarship application with this year’s current dates. I will bring copies to our next meeting, post them downstairs on the bulletin board, to the Legion and the Sons of the Legion to share at their meeting, and to the Roland-Story High School counseling office.
Junior report: Emma Schnurstein shared that she is currently working on the completing activities for the Poppy Patch, Technology Patch, and Veteran’s Affairs and Rehabilitation Patch for the American Legion Auxiliary Junior Patch program.
Poppy: A poppy order has been placed. Sue Frette will be taking all of the wreaths to her house, so that she will be able to take the older poppies off before next May when we make the poppy sprays again.
Veteran’s Affairs and Rehab: Dianne Swenson gave a lap robe to Vernon Ullestad, a WWII Veteran who lives at Bethany Manor. Angie Schnurstein will submit information about our unit wanting to give out lap robes to Veteran’s in the Story City Herald, to the Legion, and the Sons of the Legion. The VA Hospital in Des Moines needs new L and XL t-shirts, underwear, sweatpants, and sweatshirts. Virginia Swenson made a motion and Emma Schnurstein seconded the motion to bring a box to the lobby area of the legion and label it for people to bring in these new items that can be donated to the Veterans.
Communications: Secretary, Angie Schnurstein, read a thank you note from the Roland-Story Elementary School for our $25 donation to their Reading is Fundamental program. We also received a thank you note from the Auxiliary Emergency Fund for our $25 donation.
Unfinished Business included: Dianne Swenson is trying to make a connection with a Veteran’s family that we could help in any ways over the holidays.
New Business included: We voted on cancelling our December 19th, 2017 Auxiliary meeting. Virginia Swenson made a motion and Emma Schnurstein seconded the motion to not have an Auxiliary meeting in the month of December in the future.
Announcements: The Veteran’s Day luncheon was very nice and thank you to those that brought food. An empty table was set up that day to honor Veteran’s in spirit that have served their country. Stevens Memorial Chapel from Ames donated a beautiful cake thanking our Veterans for their service. The Christmas party will be December 9th at the Legion for members only. Kenny Frette will play that night. The customer appreciation Christmas party is going to be December 23rd. Betty Martin won the raffle gift, which was a decorated vase with dried flowers.

There will not be a December meeting. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 16, at 6:30 pm. Our hostesses will be Angie Schnurstein and Emma Schnurstein.
