Now everyone is thinking about Christmas…..holiday time off, families traveling, and gift exchanges. As one who loves the reason for celebration, but a bit “bah humbug,” with the shopping and over-the-top things that goes along with the holiday, I’m grateful for those around me with genuine joy over every aspect of the season. They make me smile as they start the decorating process, giggling over the fanciful books, and playing their favorite Christmas music. Like many, I struggle with the changes in my family, and miss the years when I could share more with my loved ones, but I still enjoy the storytelling, special concerts and services which fill my heart with joy, hope and peace.

So as the season is upon us, you will see a transformation at the library. Patrons may view the Book Tree being erected inside the library and watch as the interior gradually is decked with holiday décor like many homes and businesses in Story City and throughout the world. Storytime will bring to life the tales of the Christmas spirit with peace hope and joy and a very special Family Storytime will feature Santa Clause as our guest!

Dates to remember in December include:

• Friday, Dec. 1 at 10:30 a.m. and Every Friday in December – Regular Pre-school Storytime

• Saturday, Dec. 2 at 10:30 a.m. – Monthly Saturday Storytime (repeats Friday Storytime)

• Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 2:30 p.m. – Early Dismissal programs for K-4th and Tweens

• Thursday, Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. – Family Storytime with Santa

Music is also in the air, as we are in the midst of planning a Caroling event during the Christmas season. Young and old alike will be invited to share in the joy of singing to celebrate this very special time of year.

To add to the festivities, the Library Foundation is offering up a holiday special, bringing back the “BYOB Book Sale.” BYOB means “Bring your own box”, and fill it for $5 with anything found in the book sale room. We did this a few months ago and hundreds of books found new homes. But almost as soon as we finished the sale many more donations came into the library and we had to remove books off our shelves to make room for new materials. So not only is the book sale room full again, we have many boxes of books waiting for space to become available. So those who come early during the sale should come throughout the month of December, as they will find new selections as we restock the shelves.

There is a little of everything in the Book Sale room, with Biographies and non-fiction to fiction for all ages. There are VCR tapes and DVD’s, audio books and large print books all looking for another home where they can share their stories. The Foundation book sale room has items available year round, but with the demand for space in our building growing every day, we have had to make changes so we can now offer some of the materials we have invested in over the years. And the Foundation accepts donations all year round, not only of gently used books, but monetary gifts that can be used to help enhance the library for everyone to enjoy now and in the future.

So enjoy the season and share that wonderful spirit with those around you. It’s what makes the world a better place for us all, believing and living with the knowledge that the greatest of all the gifts is the love that you share.
