The Grout Museum District in Waterloo is seeking a photograph of Private Robert Hans Gertsen of Story City. The current featured exhibit, “Faces of the Fallen,” honors the 567 Iowans who died in the Korean War. The exhibition displays a photograph and information on all of these fallen. It will also become a permanent part of the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum, a part of the Grout Museum District.
A high-resolution photograph of Robert Hans Gertsen is needed to complete this project. He is one of 12 fallen heroes from Story County, and the last to have not been located. The Grout is asking the public to help locate these precious, important photographs.
Gertsen was born in February 1929. He was raised and graduated school in Story City. He was drafted into the military in November 1950. He served in the Army’s 7th Infantry Division while he fought in Korea. He died on June 1, 1951, while fighting in North Korea. His remains were returned to Iowa and buried at the Story City Cemetery.
The Grout Museum District hopes to honor and preserve his memory through this project. If any family or friends of the fallen have information or photographs they are willing to provide, please contact the Grout Museum.
Photos should be scanned as .jpg at 300 dpi. For instructions on how to scan and send a photo, contact 319-234-6357 or send photos directly to email@example.com.
