• To wrap up the school year, students in Mr. Klett’s DMACC’s Introduction to Literature have been reading Robert Pirsig’s “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” which on the surface is about a father and son taking a motorcycle ride out west. At the same time, the novel also includes a deeper look at ancient Greek philosophy and how it still applies to the world today.

• In Mr. Sheahan’s history class at the middle school, they have just finished up explorer presentations. Students had to visually represent five things about their explorers. They were: 1 - country they sailed for; 2 - goals for exploration; 3 - hardships they faced while exploring; 4 - contact they had with natives; and 5 - what their accomplishment was. After the exploration unit, they will be talking about the earliest people to come over and colonize the Americas and the struggles they faced.

• The elementary library is getting ready for some big changes! Their new windows are in, and they will be moving into their new space this summer. It’s fun to see the designs and colors falling into place.

• Right now in Mr. Schwartz’s geometry class, students are working on four projects instead of doing traditional notes and homework. One project is about tennis balls, one is about pyramids around the world, one is on packaging products, and one is creating their own Breakout EDU game. All of the projects involve finding surface area and volume of 3-D objects.

• On Tuesday, April 24, the 7th and 8th Grade Concert Band and 7th and 8th Grade Jazz Band will be having their final performance of the year at Roland-Story Middle School. The concert will begin at 7 p.m., and will take place in the new gym. Admission for adults will be $3. The 7th and 8th grade students have been working hard and are very excited about the pieces they will be performing! They are working on several “pop tunes,” including music from “The Incredibles” and “Star Wars.” The 8th graders voted on a medley of Bruno Mars music for their spotlight piece and are doing great work with that. It is going to be a fun concert! The middle school bands are under the direction of Ms. Kara Bader.
