Touch A Truck
The GCC’s annual Touch A Truck event will be Thursday, May 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. in downtown Story City. This is the third year for the event, which gives curious children the opportunity to learn the operations of the various trucks that travel throughout the community. This year the GCC plans to have more trucks of different shapes and sizes. The Story City EDC will also be providing hot dogs for the event.
EMS Week BBQ
The Story City First Responders invite the public to their 12th annual EMS Week BBQ on Tuesday, May 22, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Roland-Story High School football field. The event is in celebration of National Emergency Medical Services Week, which is May 21-25. A savory pork sandwich meal will be provided by the Story County Pork Producers and will be a free-will donation. Proceeds go directly to equipment and training. Come check out the Story City Ambulance and First Response emergency vehicle as well as meet the team of responders. Life Flight will be landing on the football field, weather permitting. In the event of rain, the event will relocate to the Story City Fire Station, 512 Park Ave.
Library Box Sale
The Bertha Bartlett Public Library Foundation is hosting a box sale through the end of May. For $5, you can fill up any size box with materials from the library’s sale room. Some of the proceeds will support the 2018 Summer Reading Program.
Candidate for Iowa Secretary of State, Deidre Dejear, will be in Roland for a meet-and-greet on Saturday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Erickson Park, 202 N. Park. The event is hosted by Erik Howe and is open to the public. A free lunch will be served.
A 2018 legislative review will be held Tuesday, May 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ames Public Library. Invited legislators from central Iowa include Rep. Rob Bacon, Rep. Chip Baltimore, Rep. Dave Deyoe, House Majority Leader Linda Upmeyer, Sen. Jerry Behn, Sen. Jeff Edler, Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver and Sen. Annette Sweeney. The event is sponsored by the Republican Women of Central Iowa.
The League of Women Voters of Ames and Story County, along with the Center for Rural Affairs, invites the public to participate in a forum for the Senate District 25 candidates on Wednesday, May 23, in the Nevada Public Library, 631 K Ave., from 6 to 7:30 p.m. All three candidates competing in the June 5 primary election have been invited: Republicans Annette Sweeney (incumbent) and Chad Buss and Democrat Tracy Freese. Freese, who is unchallenged in the primary, will not be attending, however, the LWV expects to hold another forum prior to the general election with all the candidates. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions of Sweeney and Buss and hear their views on issues affecting Iowans. Senate District 25 encompasses Harden and Grundy counties; southeast Butler county; and Story County except Gilbert, Ames, Kelley, and Slater. The League of Women Voters and the Center for Rural Affairs are nonpartisan organizations.
Stitch ‘n’ Knit
Stitch ‘n’ Knit meets at Bertha Bartlett Public Library every Friday at 10 a.m. If you knit, crochet or stitch anything by hand, come enjoy an hour of fellowship with other crafters. Remember to bring a project to keep your hands busy!
On Friday, May 17, at 1 p.m., at the Story City Community Center, people age 55 and over are invited to play bridge club and/or the card game “Hand and Foot.” No reservations or charge required, but a snack to share is appreciated.
On Wednesday, May 23, a Fellowship Luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. at the Story City Community Center. The cost is $4 per person age 55 and over. The delicious meals are catered by Story City Market’s deli. A monthly menu and contact information can be picked up at the center. Bring your own table service or buy supplies for 25 cents. The event offers great food, fellowship and Bingo! Reservations can be made by calling Ruby Olson at 515-733-9278.
The blockbuster hit “Avengers: Infinity War” will be presented Friday, Saturday, Sunday, May 18, 19, 20, at the Story Theater in Story City. Carousel’s Opening Day
Story City’s Antique Carousel will celebrate its opening day for the 2018 season with a with a Season Opening/Lights On Event on Friday, May 25, from 6-8 p.m. The Carousel can be rented from now throught May 24 for birthday celebrations, anniversary celebrations or other special events.
