The McDonald’s restaurant in Story City is under new ownership as are the locations in Story County (one in Nevada and two in Ames), Boone and Carroll.

Jim and Karen Baker, who have owned the Story City location since 2011, sold the McDonald’s restaurants to Kevin O’Brien and The O’Brien Organization, effective Aug. 1. The Bakers did extensive remodeling to both the interior and exterior of the Story City restaurant last summer, which included the installation of ordering kiosks inside and a two-lane drive-thru.

The O’Brien Organization has owned and operated McDonald’s restaurants in eastern Iowa since 1958 and “is dedicated to hiring outstanding people, building and maintaining the best restaurants and delivering a gold standard experience for its customers,” the company stated in a press release.

The O’Brien Organization now operates 18 McDonald’s restaurants in Iowa, while employing more than 1,000 Iowans.

“It’s an honor to purchase these restaurants from Jim and Karen Baker, whom I’ve been business and personal friends with for over 25 years,” O’Brien said. “I’m proud that they have chosen to pass the torch to me and my organization. We’re excited to continue the programs of Archways to Opportunity and provide other great benefits to our employees. I look forward to being a part of each community and being a good corporate citizen.”

As a second-generation owner/operator, O’Brien has spent his entire life in the McDonald’s system. His parents opened their first location on Riverside Drive in Iowa City in 1958 and his mother, Dorothy O’Brien, was one of the first women franchisees in the McDonald’s system.

“His restaurants are consistently acknowledged for their outstanding customer service achievements, superb operations and exceptional employee development,” said Michelle Shalla, marketing director for The O’Brien Organization.

O’Brien is the vice president of the National Leadership Council of McDonald’s Owner/Operators; he helps sponsor teams that develop new McDonald’s food concepts and works with government relations and communications.

All of O’Brien’s newly acquired restaurants are now hiring for all positions and shifts.
