Progressive Dinner


The 2018 Progressive Dinner will be help on Thursday, Aug. 16, from 5-7 p.m. in downtown Story City. Each participating business will have one food item that fits into this year’s theme, “Board Games.” The objective is to go from business to business, eating your way through downtown. This is a great opportunity for our local businesses to show off their cooking skills and their business. Tickets on sale now at the GCC office. Tickets costs are: children 10 and under, free; children ages 11-17, $5; and adults, $10.


Sons of Norway August Event


The August Sons of Norway Kong Sverre Lodge’s Event will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, at the Community Center, 503 Elm Ave., in Story City. The evening will be a celebration of the 50 years Kong Sverre Lodge of Sons of Norway has been in Story City. Kong Sverre Lodge was chartered on Aug. 20, 1968, with 167 charter members. The name “Kong Sverre” was the name of a ship rented in Bergen, Norway, in 1847 to carry 165 Norwegians to New York City, N.Y. There will be a dinner and program beginning at 6 p.m. with charter members from 1968 as special guests. The theme for the evening is “What is Your Family Story?” as everyone has their favorite story about their relatives emigrating from Norway and their move to Story City or elsewhere. There will be stories and songs to enjoy and Kong Sverre Lodge will be displaying items and memorabilia from the past 50 years. The cost for the evening is complimentary for charter members, $7 for members and $12 for guests. Guests are always welcome to attend. Dance at the Moose


The Heartland Senior Services Spring Dance will be from 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Moose Family Center, North US Highway 69 and West 190th St. in Ames. Kenny Frette and the Country Classic Band will perform. Admission is $6 each. All are welcome. Sponsorship for the dance is provided by Bethany Life.


Field Day in Roland


A field day will be held at the Roland Community Center on Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The field day will cover the topics of cover crops, water quality and cost share. Hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the event is free and open to the public. The evening will begin with complimentary meal and will feature presentations from water quality researchers and local farmers. Roland Farmer’s Market


The Roland Farmer’s Market will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, and every Thursday this season. The market will be held on Main Street in the vacant lot behind Casey’s. Items you may find this year include baked goods, jams and jellies, fresh eggs, a meal each week and fresh produce. RPL at Farmer’s Market


Also, the Roland Public Library will be at the Farmer’s Market this summer from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Activities will include a short storytime for younger children as well as songs and movement activities. There will also be a craft that all kids can enjoy. Earn an extra entry into the summer reading grand prize drawing by showing up and participating! Support local vendors and your library as well by coming by.


South Park Storytime


Cross the Swinging Bridge to enter a land of enchantment during the inaugural summer of Saturday South Park Storytime. Each Saturday this summer, at 10 a.m., there will be an hour of stories for kids of all ages at the South Park. Bring a blanket or chairs for comfort. Stitch ‘n’ Knit


Stitch ‘n’ Knit meets at Bertha Bartlett Public Library every Friday at 10 a.m. If you knit, crochet or stitch anything by hand, come enjoy an hour of fellowship with other crafters. Remember to bring a project to keep your hands busy!


Play cards


On Friday, Aug. 10, at 1 p.m., at the Story City Community Center, people age 55 and over are invited to play bridge club and/or the card game “Hand and Foot.” No reservations or charge required, but a snack to share is appreciated.


Fellowship luncheon


On Wednesday, Aug. 15, a Fellowship Luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. at the Story City Community Center. The cost is $4 per person age 55 and over. The delicious meals are catered by Story City Market’s deli. A monthly menu and contact information can be picked up at the center. Bring your own table service or buy supplies for 25 cents. The event offers great food, fellowship and Bingo! Reservations can be made by calling Ruby Olson at 515-733-9278.


Story Theater


The animated hit “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” will be shown Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Aug. 10, 11, 12, at the Story Theater in Story City.
