The Northern Natural Gas Company conducted a controlled pressure release for a gas pipeline north of Story City on two separate occasions recently. Beginning on Monday evening, August 5, at around 9 p.m., and lasting until 2 a.m., the company began releasing gas from a release valve, resulting in a loud noise that could be heard within the city limits of Story City. There being no public threat, the Story City Police and the Story City Fire Department still closed Grand Avenue/R-61/555th Avenue north, from Roosevelt to 100th Street, as a safety precaution during the pressure release.
Northern Natural Gas was conducting the controlled release to allow for repair work on a pipeline that was damaged north of the release valve. The second scheduled pressure release took place the next day, on Tuesday, August 6, from 2 to 6 p.m., with the road north out of Story City once again blocked off.
