The Roland Cemetery Association Board was recently approached by Boy Scout Jordan White with a proposed Eagle Scout project for the Roland Cemetery. Jordan, whose mother passed away last year and is buried in the cemetery, came up with an idea to place section markers at various locations within the cemetery, which will help in locating gravesites.
On August 3, Jordan, along with members of his family, several board members, his Scoutmaster Hale Strasser and a group of his fellow troop members met for a work day to place the section markers. A total of 20 markers were placed in Sections C and D. The markers are approximately 12 inches square made of granite, with the section letters etched into them. They were made with assistance from the Nevada Monument Company.
At the conclusion of the project, the cemetery board provided a lunch of hot dogs, chips and a drink to all of the volunteers to commemorate the special event. Former Eagle Scout and Roland Cemetery Board members Kelly Popp commented that the section markers will make a great addition to the cemetery: "For those genealogists and researchers that use the association’s website to locate graves and ownership records, it will be easier to physically locate sites with a tangible way-finding device," he said.
Board members present included Galen Stole, Kelly Popp, Deanne Popp and Jerry Christian. Other youth volunteers present were Nick Stole and Addisen Popp. The Roland Cemetery Association’s website is www.rolandcemetery.org.
