Registration procedures are as follows: Please pre-register by calling 515-733-4301 or Deb Holm at 515-733-2819 and leave your name, phone number(s) and what class you wish to take or send an email with the same information to email@example.com If the minimum number of students (10) have not pre-registered by January 6, 2014 (January 27th for the February classes) the class will be canceled. It is important to give both a home and work phone number when you call to pre-register. You will only be notified if the class is NOT going to be held. Some classes have a restricted size and are offered on a first come basis.
Monday Night Classes
CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH: Do your travel plans include Costa Rica, Spain, Mexico? Whether it is for business or a fantastic vacation getaway, make this your first step to a successful, fun-filled trip! Sign up to learn the basics of conversational Spanish with the help of high school Spanish instructor, Mary Sara Lettow. Having travelled to all of these beautiful Spanish-speaking places, Mary Sara will help you learn what you need to know, places you’ll want to see and share some travel tips she’s picked up along the way. We will go over pronunciation and vocabulary of everyday topics and basic words and questions you’ll want to know before you go. We will work curriculum around the needs of the class. This six week course will be taught on Mondays beginning January 13th and will be held from 6:30 - 8:30 PM. Cost is $36. Room 103
CROCHET - BEGINNING STITCHES TO ADVANCED TECHNIQUES: You can create those beautiful hand-stitched pieces you’ve always admired under the instruction of expert crocheter, Sue Henning. She will focus on teaching you the beginning steps of crochet if you’ve never crocheted before or give you a refresher course now that you’re ready for those more advanced, specialized skills the seasoned crocheters use. She teaches both yarn and thread crocheting, from doilies to afghans and anything in between. Sue is able to teach left or right-handed people! If you’ve been procrastinating on taking this class, this is the year to finally do it. We twisted Sue’s arm to offer it one more year! Join this friendly, fun-filled four week course from 6:00 to 9:00 PM beginning Monday night January 13th. The class is $36 with a supply fee of $10.00. IT’S A CROCHET RETREAT & REUNION: Let’s get together again! Pull out your projects, pick up your hooks, pull up a chair and join us for our first ever Crochet Retreat & Reunion. If you’re in need of a quick refresher course, need Sue’s help on a particular pattern or just need the motivation to get started on that afghan again, this one week reunion is the place you need to come! Bring a show & tell piece let’s see what you’ve been up to and how far you’ve come! THE INSPIRED COOK: (February 3, 10, 17) Stuck in a food rut? Expand your culinary horizons! Many of us in America have lost our connection with food, eating overly-processed items on the run. In this class, you will be inspired to get back in the kitchen! We’ll discuss the importance of using "real" ingredients and how simple healthy cooking can be. You’ll experiment with different cooking techniques in order to coax the best flavors out of your food. You’ll explore new flavors and learn how to incorporate them into your everyday meals. Discover how being fearless and a little daring with your food can make cooking and eating a whole lot more fun! Class taught by Becky Ringsby, owner of SAVOR Specialty Chef Services. An extra fee for groceries will be required along with the registration fee of $18.00. This class will meet for 3 weeks beginning Monday, February 3rd from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in Room 203.
Tuesday Night Classes
QUILTING – STRIPS & SALSA: This year’s class we will be making a quilt using 2½" strips. This is a great quilt for using a jelly roll or 2½" strips from your stash, it can also be made using scraps left over from other projects. The class is taught by Sue Henning from 6:00 to 9:00 PM Tuesday evenings for four weeks beginning January 14th. The cost will be $36 and there are no extra fees. Materials needed: I.) A number of assorted 2½" strips (35 to 40 strips) with 3 1/2 yards of background fabric. The pattern will be supplied the first night of class. Quilt size is 56" x 72". You will also need a rotary cutter, mat, ruler, basic sewing supplies and your own sewing machine in good working order with a quarter inch foot. This is a fun, very relaxed class. We love show and tell and are always interested in new ideas and designs. Grab a friend and come and have a great time! Room 203
CPR/AED/FIRST AID FOR NON-HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS – The Story City First Responders will offer this class on location at the Story City Fire Station at 512 Park Avenue, Story City. During the three week course, they will teach you how to manage illness and injury until the First Responders arrive. General principles, environmental emergencies, medical emergencies and injury emergencies will be covered along with CPR/AED training for adults, children and infants. Classes will begin Tuesday, January 14 and be held for three weeks from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Story City Fire Station. Call in to register at 515-733-4301. There is a $15 fee to the Story City First Responders for materials, this includes your certification card.
LINE DANCING: Lots of fun and a work-out too! Line Dancing class, under the energetic training of instructor Jamie (Hetland) Larson will meet again this year on Tuesday nights at Carousel Lanes at 215 W. Broad Street in Story City. Class will be held from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. for five weeks beginning on January 14th and continue on the 21st, 28th, February 4th and 11th. Cost for this class is $22.50. "FIXING" MY PHOTOS & MORE! (February 4 & 11) Are you looking to add a creative flair to your photographs? Need to erase a stranger from the background of a potential holiday card? Need better photos to use in your scrapbooking pages? Just want to feel more comfortable working with your digital images? Roland-Story art instructor, Amber Doyle will help you to learn how to manipulate your photos in Adobe Photoshop CS4. Class will be held on Tuesday, February 4th and Tuesday, February 11th. We will cover importing photos with iPhoto, basic Photoshop tools, and we’ll complete one "art" assignment that will include some photography "homework". This 2 week class runs from 6:30 to 8:00 on Tuesday, February 4th and 11th in Room 101. Cost is $9.00 and must be limited to 10 seats!
HUNTER SAFETY EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION begins Tuesday, February 4, 2014: The Iowa certified hunter education course includes ten hours of instruction on a variety of subjects. Ethics is stressed throughout the course. Topics covered include firearms safety and handling, first aid and survival, specialty hunting with black powder and archery equipment, wildlife management, conservation law, and other related topics. Enrollees must attend all sessions in order to become certified. The course will be instructed by volunteer instructors certified by the state of Iowa. All materials are provided free to the enrollees by the state. No firearms or ammunition are to be brought to the course. You must be 12 years old to take this class. Classes will be February 4, 11, 18 & 25 from 6:30 to 9:00 in Room 102. Class size is limited to 20. You must pre-register online with the Iowa Dept of Natural Resources (www.iowadnr.gov/training) and please call 515-733-4301 and also pre-register to let us know you have registered.

SCANDINAVIAN BAKING: Carry on the local tradition and learn how to make three different Norwegian goodies under the direction of expert, Connie Rasmusson. Connie will share her tried and true family recipes. You will learn how to bake kringla, roll out lefse and make potato cakes. Plan to take home what you make. This class will be limited to 12 participants so be sure to preregister early! Thursday evenings, January 16th, 23rd, 30th from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. LET’S GO BOWLING! (beginning February 6th) Ward off cabin fever this winter and join in for some fun and entertainment! This class will give you the fundamental bowling skills you need if you’re a beginner or can help you gain new techniques to improve your game. Bowling classes will be held at Carousel Lanes at 215 W. Broad Street in Story City. Relax and enjoy an evening out for 4 weeks beginning on Thursday, February 6th from 7:30-9:00 PM. The cost is $18.00 with an additional supply cost of $16.00 for bowling and shoe rental. Left-handed bowlers are welcome! Bowling is a great sport for all ages, call and sign up today!
"OLD FASHION" P.E. CLASS WITH A TWIST - An exciting all-new six week long class has been added to the Roland-Story Adult Ed program line-up. Starting Thursday, February 6th this class will offer adults the opportunity to join in on an "old-fashion" co-ed Physical Education class. This will be a two-hour exercise program strictly for adults, built around grown-up versions of gym class staples. Getting in shape is just a bonus to the main attraction – a night out with friends at the gym! Registration fee is $36. Roland-Story 9-12 Physical Education and Health & Wellness Instructor, Larry Ammerman will get the fun going with Dodgeball, Badminton, Table Tennis and more of your old-time favorites without those dreaded calisthenics!
