Sylvina Beatrice Ray, 95, of Story City died May 2, 2017, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services were Friday, May 5, 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Jewell. Burial was in the Story City Cemetery.


Sylvina was born on May 26, 1921, in Elkton, S.D., to Iver and Alma (Sande) Underland. She was baptized at Norway Lutheran Church, Garretson, S.D., and confirmed at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, S.D. She graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls in 1939. Sylvina married Herbert Ray at Bethesda Lutheran Church, Jewell, Iowa, parsonage on Jan. 1, 1942. They farmed and lived west of Jewell until retiring to Story City in 1989.


Sylvina was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She enjoyed maintaining her own home. Her busy weekly schedule included morning coffee at McDonalds, driving to Ames every Tuesday, playing cards and dominoes with her friends and spending time with her family. She was known as “The lady in red.”


She is survived by two sons, Daryll (Melissa) Ray of Knoxville, Tenn., and Sterling (Paula) Ray of Jewell; a son-in-law, Merlyn J. Hegland of Ellsworth; seven grandchildren, Kent (Joy) Ray, Mark (Sheril) Ray, Michael (Amy) Ray, Kayla Harding, David (Dawn) Hegland, Kristi Hegland Busch and Rebecca Ray; nine great-grandchildren, Michael Ray, Emma Ray, Matthew Ray, John Hegland, Alyssa Hegland, Aaron Hegland, Kenzie Busch, Karlie Busch and Austin Busch.


Sylvina was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert W. Ray; daughter, Carol Hegland; grandson, David Ray; brother and sister-in-law, Orville and Lois Underland and sister and brother-in-law, Dolores and Orlin Anderson.
