Betty Jean (Gertsen) Ray, age 90, died peacefully at Westhaven Community Care Center, Boone, Iowa, on Tuesday, June 6, 2017. Survivors include four daughters: Marla (Bruce) Lenocker of Dubuque, Barb (Bob) Herrstrom of Boone, Sharon (Dennis) Erb of Boone, and Darlene (Daryl) Doerder of Boone. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents Hans and Cora (Boe) Gertsen, husband Lloyd Junior Ray, and infant daughter Marlene Joan Ray.

Betty was born in rural Story County and graduated from Story City High School. She attended and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught elementary school in Melbourne and Webster City. She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City.

Lloyd and Betty were married on Aug. 14, 1948. They were married 61 years and farmed in rural Boone County. She was a member of Gilbert Lutheran Church and served on several committees. She loved to follow her grandchildren’s activities, play cards, drop nickels in the slot machines, travel, and was an avid quilter. Family was number one to her.

Visitation for Betty will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at Westhaven Chapel, 111 W. Fourth St., Boone. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Gilbert Lutheran Church, 135 School St., Gilbert, with visitation at the church from noon until the time of the service. Interment will be at Story City Municipal Cemetery, Story City. The family will be giving memorials at their discretion to Westhaven and Gilbert Lutheran Church.
