Kathryn “Katie” Marie Amenson, 89, of Story City died surrounded by her family on Jan. 2, 2018, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Jan. 6, at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland.
Katie was born on June 12, 1928, in Nevada, Iowa, to Owen “Sam” and Marjorie (Tillotson) Oxley. She graduated from Nevada High School in 1945 and married Harry Amenson on June 16, 1946. Katie and Harry lived in Nevada and Roland until moving to Story City in 2015. Katie worked for Donnelly’s doing home typing and then as a secretary at Iowa State University in Information Services for many years.
Katie was a long-time member of Bergen Lutheran Church. She enjoyed dancing, camping, going on motorcycle rides and trips, and spending her winters in Mesa, Ariz. Katie was an excellent cook and baker and generously shared her bounty with others. Family was most important to Katie with grandchildren and great-grandchildren holding a special place in her heart.
Katie is survived by her husband, Harry of Story City; two sons, Jerry (Deb) Amenson of Des Moines and Craig (Pam) Amenson of Ankeny; a daughter, Deb (Tom) Baldus of Osage ; seven grandchildren, Mark (Kaleigh), Kevin (Jessie), Tyler (Kelly), Mandy (Chris), Abby, Derek (Tammy) and Jereme (Jes); nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald (Bev) Oxley; and five sisters, Wanda Barnett, Maxine Fry, Joan Banks, Pauline Breer and Janice (Max) Dobson; in-laws Jack McWilliams, Bessie McWilliams and Louise Amenson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Brian Amenson; two brothers, Howard and Owen Oxley; a sister, Nancy Weatherman; five brothers-in-law, Dean Barnett, John Fry, Wilbert Breer, Laurence Banks, Jr., Bob Weatherman and Argyll Amenson and a sister-in-law, Wilma Oxley.
