LaVerne L. Childers, 89, of Roland died Jan. 3, 2018, at his home in Roland. Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Roland. Burial with military honors will follow in the Roland Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church.
LaVerne was born on Oct. 11, 1928, in Nevada, Iowa, to William H. and Ellen S. (Sorenson) Childers. He married Phyllis Hovde on April 7, 1956. LaVerne was an Army veteran of World War II and a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He worked at Baldus Hatchery and the Heart of Iowa Coop. He was a lifetime resident of Roland and member of Salem Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. LaVerne was a Roland American Legion, VFW and 40 and 8 Voiture 285. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping and dancing.
LaVerne is survived by his wife Phyllis of Roland; two daughters, Janice Bucklin-Childers of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Julie (Doyle) McCarl of Roland; seven grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason, Jennifer, Anthony, Jenna, Amanda and Kimberly; 12 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Doris Childers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Kellan Starrett; four brothers, Arthur, Wilford, Harold and Delbert “Bud”; and four sisters, Martha Martin, Darlene Schmidt, Lila Hemnes and Bernita Raines.
