Harold E. Childers, 88, of Story City died August 20, 2013 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Memorial services were held at Salem Lutheran Church in Roland, Friday, August 23rd at 2:00 p.m. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church. Harold was a WWII US Navy Veteran; graveside military honors followed in the Roland Cemetery.

Harold was born on February 5, 1925 in Nevada, Iowa to parents William H. and Ellen S. (Sorenson) Childers. He joined the US Navy before he graduated from high school.

He married Doris Ness on August 13, 1946. Harold retired from Munsen Chevrolet as an auto mechanic. Harold and Doris lived in Roland until 1988 when they moved to Story City. He was a lifetime member of Salem Lutheran Church and a member of the Roland American Legion. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, camping, fishing and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes play.

He is survived by Doris, his wife of 67 years; three daughters, Carol Patterson (Greg) of Story City, Diane Swenson of Story City and Louise Ahrens (Rodney) of Ames; six grandchildren, Tracey Dennis (David), Christopher Rutter (Stacy), Shanon Green, Wendy Whitaker (B.J.), Matt Ahrens (Kelly) and Justin Ahrens (Kelsey); 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, LaVerne (Phyllis) Childers of Roland, one sister, Bernita Rains of Nevada and sister-in-law Frances Childers of Roland.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Arthur, Wilford and Delbert "Bud"; three sisters, Martha Martin, Darlene Schmidt and Lila Hemnes; son-in-law, Paul Swenson and brother-in-law, Frank Rains.
