Mildred Hill was born on September 2, 1910, to Martin and Louisa (Anderson) Swenson on the family farm in Ellsworth, Iowa. Mildred was confirmed at the Lutheran Church there and graduated from Ellsworth High School. Upon her parent’s retirement, she moved with them to Story City in 1930. An alumnus of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, she married Lowell Kenneth Johnson on September 30, 1934. They had one son, Paul, born in 1941. Her husband Kenneth died suddenly in 1956, succumbing to a World War II service disability received when he was a Medic in the US Army in North Africa.
Mildred was active in her school activities, church and town affairs. After many years a widow, she wed Alvern Hill of Ellsworth, Iowa, in 1978. Mildred and Alvern, a widower, had been former classmates in Ellsworth growing up together. They made their home on the Hill family farm in rural Ellsworth, and then moved to a home in Stanhope, Iowa, a community they thoroughly enjoyed together. Alvern and Mildred enjoyed many wonderful trips, winters in Florida and the sharing of numerous social events with Alvern’s loving family members over the years, Alvern passed away several years back, and Mildred was again widowed. She made her home at Cedar Place in Story City, moving there to be closer to Alvern when he was moved to Bethany Manor. Mildred moved to Bethany Manor herself several months ago, for security and fear of falling, all the while asking God if her "time" could be soon, as she was ready to join him for eternity. Her wish was lovingly and peacefully granted in a personal and quiet setting on the evening of November 21, 2013.
Mildred is survived by her son, Paul, of West Des Moines, Iowa, a Granddaughter, Erika C. Johnson of Restin, Virginia and Mildred’s "Baby" Sister, Betty Kieser of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Alvern and Mildred Hill’s numerous and wonderful Hill family members they both loved dearly.
Memorial Contributions or donations on Mildred’s behalf will be provided to one of several charities.
