Rodger Lovig age 70, of Ames died Friday morning, June 28, 2013 at Bethnay Manor in Story City. A gathering of friends and family memorial service will be held Saturday, July 20 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Story City.

Rodger was born October 13, 1942 in Zearing at his family home to Theodore (Ted) and Ruth (Stout) Lovig. He attended school in Story City and was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church.

Rodger married Denise (Johanns) Balfanz on November 16, 1991 in Story City. They worked with Ames Landscape and Nursery for many years. Rodger helped create many personal gardens with Denise. He was a true gardener, hole digger, and enjoyed watching the plantings mature.

Rodger is survived by his wife Denise and his daughter, Kim (Chris) Holst; step-children Alex (Bobbi) Balfanz, and Kimberly (Joe) Chelsvig; nine grandchildren, Destiny, Domanic, Kendra and Kjeirsten Holst, Parker Rose and Gabe Balfanz, Ben, Dawson and Christian Chelsvig; brothers, Richard (Jeanette) Lovig, Ron (Ann) Lovig; sisters, Sonja DeBerg (Larry) and Sandi (Paul) Risdal; many nieces and nephews; and his father-in-law, Joe Johanns.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his niece, Julia Larsen.

Memorials may be directed to Heartland Senior Day Center in Ames.
