I am writing to express my support for the February bond proposal that will provide funding for renovation of the high school auditorium and relocate the football, track and marching band facility from its current location to a new location where the former VF Mall is located.

My family has lived in Story City since 1973, and we have been strong supporters of both Story City and the greater Roland-Story community. We are former small business owners in town, and know and understand the many benefits of living, working, and being educated in our great communities. I have loved having the opportunity to both grow up and live here, as well as be able to raise my own children here. I have a strong desire for our communities and schools to continue to thrive and to grow.

I understand the history and tradition surrounding our current facilities as well as anyone. It is a beautiful setting and holds many memories for me. However, I believe the proposal to move our athletic facilities East, to the site of the former VF mall, would be a great step toward addressing the issues we are facing at our current facility. Our school administrators really examined these issues, the costs required to renovate the current facility, as well as the costs to construct the brand-new facility. I believe if you take the time to review the options and costs, you will see that the wise decision is to vote yes to the bond proposal.

If Story City and Roland are going to continue to thrive and grow, it will require young people moving into our communities, and young families often look at the school systems as a deciding factor for choosing which community to live in. These families will examine academic performance, extra-curriculars, and facilities. They will try to determine whether we are preparing for the future, living for today, or living in the past. This is a great opportunity to make an investment in our schools, and help create years of opportunities for more kids and families to experience growing and living in Story City or Roland.

Financially, I have been briefed on our current and projected taxes, and feel that they are both reasonable and justifiable for approving the bond proposal inclusive of both the high school auditorium and new athletic facilities. We need strong leaders and supporters to step forward now to help create the vision for the future of our schools and communities. I urge each of you to carefully consider the options and implications. Get the detailed information, consider what your desires for Story City and Roland are, and give your support to the full bond proposal.

Sincerely,

Roger Parker
