2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the formation of Good Neighbor Emergency Assistance, Inc. (Good Neighbor). Since April of 1997 when the first office opened, the agency has provided services to help those in our community experiencing difficult life situations. Each year thousands of individuals from every community in Story County receive assistance through Good Neighbor.
The agency provides rental and utility assistance in an effort to avoid homelessness and/or the disruption of needed services. Healthy Food Vouchers are given to ensure that nutritious meals are available within the home. Gas Vouchers are available to assist individuals and families with emergency transportation needs. Applicants are provided with referral information to other community organizations when services not directly provided by Good Neighbor are needed. All assistance is provided in an atmosphere of dignity, comfort and encouragement.
United Way of Story County has been a dedicated partner to Good Neighbor since its inception, providing essential funding to the fledgling organization to strengthen its ability to assist those in need. Good Neighbor became a UWSC partner agency in 2008. Since that time, United Way support has been provided for all Good Neighbor programs, including expansion of the Healthy Food Voucher program and seed monies to initiate and sustain the Gas Voucher program. UWSC was instrumental in helping renovate and remodel our current facility. Because of their financial support, no money that would have otherwise been used to serve clients was used in this construction. These efforts have strengthened Good Neighbor, and in turn, our community as a whole.
I strongly encourage everyone in our community to help support United Way of Story County. Your contribution, no matter the size, will help improve the lives of individuals and families in need throughout Story County.
