Dear Editor,

The YWCA Ames-ISU is an important organization, focusing on eliminating racism and empowering women. Through the YWCA’s Engaging International Spouses and Students program, I was given the option to join an English class for free to prepare for an academic English test named “TOEFL” (Test of English as a foreign language). I am a nurse with a German education, and I will need this test to apply for a license as a nurse here in Iowa. After 23 years in my profession, I still enjoy my job as a nurse. Returning to my profession is important for me as I become a member of this great community.

United Way of Story County supports YWCA Ames-ISU programming such as its International Spouses and Students program. This program is such an asset to our community, as it acclimates internationals by providing free education on English skills, assists in the ISU application process, volunteer opportunities, and making friends, all bettering the lives of internationals while here in Ames.
