Me along with my wife Katie and father Jeff represented Story City at the 2012 Main Street Awards’ ceremony at Veteran’s Auditorium, Des Moines this past Friday night. The four hour event included an opportunity to meet directors, board members and volunteers from all of Iowa’s Main Street communities. Iowa has one of the most active Main Street programs in the nation. Iowa’s broad array of community spirit and volunteerism were displayed during the awards presentation that lasted approximately three hours. Story City was nominated amongst the highest number of awards of other communities in Iowa for its many efforts to maintain a vibrant downtown. Please thank any GCC board member that you meet for all of their 2012 efforts for both Main Street and the community as a whole. Story City downtown business Broad Street Market won the award for the Best Visual Merchandising. I accepted the award from Iowa Governor Terry Branstad on their behalf. Nicole Engelhardt received recognition as the volunteer of the year for her tireless efforts volunteering in countless Story City events.

Scandinavian Days is right around the corner, June 7th to the 9th. The GCC website if full of the latest information on Scandinavian Days. Also, you should have received information in the mail. In addition, the Story City Herald and the Ames Tribune will have tabs with complete Scandinavian Information. You can also call the Story City Greater Chamber Connection at 515-733-4214 or stop by and pick up a brochure. Your support through sponsorships and volunteering are vital for the success of all of Story City’s events, but most importantly to Scandinavian Days. This event is entirely volunteer and sponsor driven. The event committee has been hard at work for several months organizing the event. However, we always need volunteers throughout the event. So, please call the GCC if you and your family are interested in helping for a day or an hour. Thanks in advance for your support.

The Antique Carousel is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The Carousel has had excellent attendance since it opened the season on May 4th. Please stop by and enjoy this community treasure and take part in a unique part of our community’s history. The Carousel is largely operated by volunteers such as you. It is impossible to thank volunteers enough for all of the vital work that they do to help our community.

The GCC is completely dependent on your support, otherwise known as "partnership," to operate. We encourage everyone to become a partner with the GCC. The GCC is Story City’s central connection to focus the energy of residents to volunteer or contribute to a wide variety of community projects and events including downtown preservation, Antique Carousel operations and Scandinavian Days administration to make Story City a vibrant place to live for young and old. As part of our motto of "Making It All Happen" in Story City, the GCC also periodically collaborates with other community organizations such as the Historical Society to assist their fundraising or the Kiwanis Club to spread their message of supporting Story City’s children’s organizations. Your support is what makes it all happen.
