Many of you may have noticed in recent months that the GCC website has occasionally not been working. Websites are a constantly growing technological wonder that start with many programs added to a central core program, each of which must work together all the time. Every time a host server or one of the many underlying programs is updated by the site provider, potentially every underlying program may need some type of adjustment. Constantly streaming new Internet technology is like adding rocks to an old wagon. At some point, our old wagon becomes full and we stop moving or the wheels simply fall off. We are to the point that our old wagon is full of rocks and the wheels are getting stuck every day. I was rescuing the web site monthly, then weekly, then daily, now hourly, often by throwing rocks (parts of the program) out of our wagon. Unfortunately, the new technology is now flowing in so fast that our wagon (our old core program) is not only full, it is getting buried. Fortunately, we have a new wagon (web site program) on the way later this year with more capacity and wheels that will carry the ever increasing modern technological load. In the mean time, please refer to our Facebook page for regular updates on GCC events.
Downtown Story City businesses will be hosting their annual Progressive Dinner on August 21st. The recent rain has brought some relief to the crops, gardens and yards. The rain has also put some flow back into the Skunk River. It is time to start planning for the annual Skunk River Duck Race. The Race will be held on August 24 in the South Park. The race will start at 6 p.m. and last until the last duck crosses the line. We will have an excellent list of prizes for the swiftest competitor. Please plan to spend a few minutes with us later this summer to see if your ducks are up to the challenge. Progressive Dinner and Duck Race tickets are available for you to purchase at the GCC office.
The Story! committee is in full swing for the annual Story! Festival to be held September 20, 21 and 22. Some featured items for this year’s Festival include a Friday night "Story and a Dinner," and Saturday "Historical 5K" and "Story Market." More information will be available as the event draws nearer.
The Story City Greater Chamber Connection is completely dependent on your support, otherwise known as "partnership," to operate. The GCC can be contacted at (515) 733-4214. We encourage everyone to become a GCC partner. The GCC is Story City’s central connection to focus the energy of residents to volunteer or contribute to a wide variety of community projects and events including downtown preservation and Antique Carousel operations to make Story City a vibrant place to live for young and old. As part of our motto of "Making It All Happen" in Story City, the GCC also periodically collaborates with other community organizations such as the Historical Society to assist their fundraising or the Kiwanis Club to spread their message of supporting Story City’s children’s organizations. Your support is what makes it all happen.
