The Norsemen placed third at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet at Baxter on May 2.

The Roland-Story boys’ track team scored 87 points, with Gilbert placing first with 177, Nevada 96, PCM 81, South Hamilton 79, North Polk 77, CMB 67, Greene County 43 and Saydel 32.

“We have been working toward running our best at this point of the season all year,” said Brian Petersen, head coach. “We challenged the kids that every single point matters so if we can move from eighth to seventh, we need to do all we can to do that.

“The kids responded and with our third-place finish, we maxed out the number of points that we felt we could have scored in this meet. Due to our kids understanding that each point matters in a meet like this, we came out in third, but the difference between third and seventh was 20 points.”

There were some groups and individuals that stood out for the Norsemen, including Zach Shadlow in the discus, Petersen said. Shadlow was seeded about sixth, but he threw his personal best and got second place.

“Sam Diehl got second place with a 6-0 performance and he continues to impress as a 10th grader. Carter Greenfield (800-meter run and relays) and Dakota Rusher (3,200-meter run and 1,600-meter run) both had great days again as well,” Petersen said.

Lydon Heifner placed sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.98, and Kyle Selby placed 12th with a time of 12.37.

Noah Thomas competed in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dash wheelchair, with times of 20.32, 36.98 and 1:15.13.

In the 200-meter dash, Brett Staton placed ninth with a time of 25.14, and Caleb Schlatter placed 14th with a time of 25.84.

Grant Olson placed sixth and Eric Dowe placed eighth in the 400-meter dash, with times of 54.77 and 56.17.

Carter Greenfield placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.12, and Marcus Thomas placed ninth with a time of 2:14.12.

Dakota Rusher placed seventh in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:49.55. And Gradyn Dowling placed 10th with a time of 5:02.18.

In the 3,200-meter run, Rusher placed second with a time of 10:10.19, and Collin Greenfield placed seventh with a time of 10:29.11.

In field events, Sam Diehl placed third in the high jump with a height of 6 feet. Kade Faga placed sixth in the long jump with a length of 17 feet 3 inches, and Ben Chelsvig placed 12th with a jump of 15 feet 11.5 inches.
