On Thursday, Nov. 30, the Norse wrestlers hosted Kuemper Catholic, Perry and Gilbert for the first meet of the new season. With a five open spots in the lineup the Norse would have a tough time competing against teams with full or near full lineups.


First up for the Norse was the Kuemper Catholic Knights and starting weight was at 285 which the Norse had no one at. Joe Hovick at 106 received a forfeit for the Norse, 113 and 126 were forfeits for the Norse and both teams were open at 120. Nick Wakefield at 132 pinned his opponent in 2:29 to get things going for the Norse. Koby Hassebrock was back in the line up at 138 after sitting out last season with a broken bone injury, pinned his opponent in 29 seconds, at 145 Max Halstead was pinned in 1:35, Andrew Braland at 152 was pinned in 2:32. Liam Scheuermann was pinned in 1:49 at 160, Rey Torres at 170 came out strong but lost by a fall in 5:18. Ben Olsen at 182 was pinned in 2:48, and at 220 Michael Schiermeister pinned his opponent in 3:58. Final score was Kuemper 48 - RS 24.


Next up for the Norse was a non conference meet between Gilbert whom they will face again in 2 weeks for conference match up. The Norse forfeited the 106 class to Gilbert moving Joe Hovick up to 113 where he won 14-0 over his opponent. Nick Wakefield at 132 defeated his opponent 4-0, Koby Hassebrock at 138 won by forfeit, Max Halstead at 145 pinned his opponent in 1:28, Andrew Braland at 152 was pinned in 58 seconds. Liam Scheuermann lost 12-2 at 160, Rey Torres at 170 was pinned in 2:41, 182 was forfeited to Gilbert moving Ben Olsen up to 195 where he won 13-3, Michael Schiermeister match went to three overtimes where he lost by an escape 3-2. Final score was Gilbert 43 - RS 23.


Last for the night was Perry, 113 and 126 weights were forfeited to Perry, Nick Wakefield at 132 continued his strong night with a 4:56 pin over his opponent. Koby Hassebrock at 138 lost by a tech fall in 5:46 19-3, Max Halstead at 145 lost a close match 8-6, at 152 Andrew Braland was pinned in 1:37. Liam Scheuermann at 160 picked up a win with a pin in 2:43, Rey Torres at 170 lost 15-9, at 182 Ben Olsen came up with a pin in 1:00, 195 was forfeited, and at 220 Michael Schiermeister pinned his opponent in 1:45. Joe Hovick closed out the night for the Norse with a pin in 2:45. Final score was Perry 41 - RS 30.


Several JV wrestlers saw action that night, Wyatt Origer went 2-0 with both as pins, Saber Cory went 2-1 for the night, Tyler Irvin was pinned in his match, CJ Tresemer won over his opponent 10-2, Jackson Sterle went 1-1, Caden Sporleder was pinned in his match, as was Lucas Risdal. The JV wrestlers were in action on Friday night at Bondurant where improvement was noted by the coaches. The Varsity team was in action on Saturday at the Woodward Granger Tournament where five wrestlers were on the stand with one champion, three third place finishes and one fifth place.


Next up for the Norse will be this Thursday night when they travel to South Hamilton for a match up between Colfax Mingo, Saydel and South Hamilton then on Friday the JV will travel to Saydel for the JV Tournament and on Saturday the Varsity will travel to Saydel for their tournament.
