At the Bengal Relays held on Tuesday, April 23, at Gilbert, the Norsemen struggled to score points in several of the Class B events. The weather was less than ideal and didn’t do the Norse any favors. Despite having no first place finishes, the Norsemen did manage three runner up posts and three third place finishes. Host Gilbert won their own meet, slipping past North Polk, 108 ½-103. Iowa Falls-Alden finished third with 86 points, followed by CMB (80), Roland-Story (67), Boone (43), South Hardin (40) and Hampton-Dumont (30 ½). Madrid, South Hamilton and Van Meter battled it out in the Class A competition, with Madrid winning 118-114-111 over the Hawks and Van Meter.
Charlie Steenhagen came in just 21/100ths of a second behind the 100 meter dash winner, claiming second with a time of :11.58. Ryan Skaar also took second in the high jump with a leap of 5 ft. 10 in. The 4 x 400 relay squad managed a runner up finish as well, posting a time of 3:40.76; just 15/100ths of a second behind Boone. Members included Rob DePenning, Trent Elliott, Blake Morgan and Charlie Steenhagen.
Claiming third for the Norse was Steenhagen in the 200 (:23.54), Matthew White in the 800 (2:11.82) and the 4 x 100 relay squad (:46.48). Members of the latter included Morgan, Dylan Halder, Andrew Schlatter and Steenhagen.
Finishing fourth for R-S were DePenning in the 400 (:54.89), and three relay teams – the 4 x 200 (1:41.02), the 4 x 800 (8:42.26) and the shuttle hurdle (1:08.06). The 4 x 200 consisted of Schlatter, Charlie Messer, Josiah Soderstrum and Alex Teig. The 4 x 800 included Jerald Fritz, Elliott, Zach Hovick and White. The shuttle hurdle team was made up of Cole Johnson, Ben Crisman, Brody Concannon and Skaar.
Fifth place finishers for the Norse included Skaar in the 110 hurdles (:17.85), Spencer Dedic in the 1600 (4:58.28) and the distance medley (4:00.41). Members of the distance squad included Soderstrum, DePenning, Elliott and Fritz.
