The Roland-Story Cross Country season opener was canceled last Thursday (Aug. 29) when the Gilbert Invitational was called off due to excessive heat. The meet, one of the largest central Iowa invitationals scheduled this season, was to have been held at the Iowa State University cross country course in Ames. The meet will not be made up.
Nearly 1,000 runners were set to embark on the campus course. Coaches and school officials had been deliberating earlier in the week as to what to do about the heat issue, and in the end, with the forecast not cooperating, and out of health concerns and the general well-being of the athletes, cancellation was the only recourse.
Therefore, Roland-Story’s first meet was pushed back until last night (Tuesday) at Webster City. Results will appear in next week’s Herald. The Norse runners will be under the guidance of first year coach Chad Gilroy this season. Gilroy succeeds Rick Stover at the helm.
