Two Story City youths were selected to join Team IOWA in the Football University’s (FBU) third annual National Championship Tournament to be held in Des Moines this weekend, Dec. 14 and 15. Originally, the tournament was scheduled to be held last weekend, but due to inclement weather affecting game sites around the country, the tournament will now be held this coming weekend.
Gabe Ante and Ben Chelsvig were among 66 football players from Central Iowa selected for the 6th and 7th grade teams, respectively. Each grade level will sport their own team. Squads from Minnesota, Nebraska and St. Louis will compete at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines Dec. 14 and 15. The nation-wide tournament featured the country’s top sixth through eighth graders playing in three separate 64-team, single elimination brackets.
The sixth graders will host Team Nebraska on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. The 7th grade squad will take on St. Louis at 1 p.m. Saturday. And the eighth grade will host Team Nebraska at 5 p.m. Round two will take place on Sunday, with consolation games in the morning and at noon, followed by the advancement games in the afternoon. Teams that advance to the final 16 travel to Wichita, KS for rounds three and four on December 21-22. The final four is set for San Antonio in the Alamodome Dec. 31 to Jan. 6.
Team IOWA has 101 players, 31 volunteer coaches and staff and a number of parent helpers that have been traveling, practicing and coordinating across the state since late October. Players were selected via three summer tryouts and statewide evaluations throughout the season.
