The Roland-Story J.V. football team concluded their season on a winning note last Monday, Oct. 21, traveling to State Center and taking a 26-12 victory away from the home town Trojans.
The Trojans received the opening kickoff, and after trading possessions, WM took over at their own two yard line. They quickly scored when one of the Trojan running backs scampered 92 yards for the TD. The PAT failed and WM was in front 6-0.
The Norsemen took over on their 31 following the kickoff, and in just four plays went 69 yards for the TD. Joe Brown had a nice run of 39 yards and QB Jerald Fritz ran in the TD from 21 yards out. The two point conversion failed and the score was tied 6-6. Toward the end of the first quarter, WM threw an interception right into the hands of Nick Moore, who promptly returned it 29 yards to the WM 11 yard line. Fritz would soon take it in on a one yard sneak. Again, the two point conversion failed and R-S led 12-6 at the quarter break.
The Norse stopped WM to begin the second period, taking over on their own 12. On the first play, Fritz connected with Moore on an 88 yard TD pass. The two pointer was no good and R-S was in front 18-6.
Following another Nick Moore interception, R-S took over on their own 20 and soon marched down to the Trojan one yard line. Unfortunately, the Norsemen could not punch it in as the half ended. Two big pass plays in the drive included a Fritz-to-Will McGraw pass for 23 yards and a Fritz-to-Moore toss for 33 yards. The half ended with R-S in charge 18-6.
In the second half, both R-S and WM each had a possession in the third and fourth quarters, as the two teams had decided to go with eight minute quarters for this game. The Norsemen and Trojans managed to score on both of their possessions in the third quarter. R-S fumbled the opening kick off and WM went down and scored to make it 18-12. The Norse answered with a six play drive of 95 yards; Eli Samo scoring the TD from 29 yards out. The two point conversion was good this time and R-S led 26-12. Big plays in the drive included Samo running for a 22 yard gain and Brown racing 41 yards.
In the fourth quarter, WM was stopped on their only possession of the period. The Norse took over on the Trojan 41 and marched it all the way down to the six, where the drive stalled; turning the ball over on downs with just under a minute to play. The final score would read R-S 26 and WM 12.
Joe Brown had 107 yards on the ground on just four carries. Eli Samo rushed for 72 yards on eight carries. Fritz carried the ball seven times for 33 yards. Alex Teig posted 19 yards on four carries. And CJ Arnold had one carry for eight yards.
Fritz was 3 for 5 passing for 144 yards and one TD. Moore caught two passes for 121 yards and a TD. And Will McGraw caught the other throw for 23 yards.
"It was nice to finish the season with a win," said Coach Matt Soderstrum. "I felt we really played pretty solid football for much of the game. Defensively, we were very sound with the exception of the long touchdown run. Nick Moore had a big night with two receptions and two interceptions. Hopefully we can build on this win for next season."
The J.V. completed their 2013 season with a 2-5 record.
