The Roland-Story softball and baseball teams were well represented as far as post-season awards and honors were concerned. The All-Heart of Iowa Conference selections were announced last month, and the Ames Tribune handed out their All-Area picks recently as well. Zach Hovick and Bryce Holmgren were both given All-State honors, as voted upon statewide by the Iowa Newspaper Association and Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association, respectively.
The Norsemen baseball team had their most successful season in history (28-14), making it to the State 2A semifinals before losing to eventual champion Beckman-Dysersville. Named to the All-HOIAC first team was Zach Hovick, who was named as a utility player. Seniors Evan Johnson and Riley Ellis were given all-conference honorable mention accolades. Hovick was also named the Player of the Year by the Ames Tribune, while his coach Chris Hill was named Coach of the Year. Evan Johnson also was named to the All-Area team by the Tribune. In addition, Hovick was placed on the second team of the 2A All-State selections.
The R-S girls’ softball team also had a fine season under fourth year coach Amber Doyle. Five Norse players were given All-Conference honors. Infielder Bryce Holmgren was a unanimous first team selection. Outfielder Cassie Shadlow was also placed on the first team. Senior Ena Moats was named to the second team all-conference. Sydney Berends and Erin Nuetzman were given honorable mention by the Heart of Iowa Conference.
In addition, Holmgren and Shadlow were both named to the Tribune All-Area team. And Holmgren was named to the 3A All-State first team as well.
