Linda Betsinger McCann, author of 10 books on Iowa history, is beginning to research her newest book, “The POW Camps in Iowa during World War II.” There was a branch camp at Toledo and at Grinnell. There was also one at Eldora, set on the fairgrounds, where the CCC camp had been.
Many people know about the main POW camps at Algona and Clarinda, but most people do not realize other areas of the state had German prisoners of war, working in the fields detasseling during the harvest or in the factories working to can the crops.
McCann is trying to find more information on these branch camps. She would like to speak with anyone who has memories of the camps or remembers the prisoners in the communities. She is also searching for pictures of the camps.
McCann can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org or 319-239-7071. She enjoys speaking about her books, and would gladly speak about the POW camps also.
