The 19th annual Rosy Cheeks Fun Run/Walk will be held in Story City on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Between 100 and 140 runners usually participate in the race, depending on the weather, said Jenny Nelson, recreation and aquatics supervisor for the Parks and Recreation Department, which hosts the event.

“We actually have people who travel quite far to be a part of our 5k,” Nelson said. “We get lots of people from Ames but we also have people come from the Des Moines area, from Marshalltown. We get a group of cross country kids from Ankeny.”

And, of course, runners from Story City, Roland and the surrounding communities also participate.

The Rosy Cheeks run was one of the first winter runs in central Iowa. Since Story City’s event has been around for nearly two decades, so it has become a tradition among many runners from outside the community.

“Some of the people who come from a distance away have been running Rosy Cheeks for many years,” Nelson said.

Race registrations are$25 until Jan. 15. From Jan. 16 through race-day registration will be $30.

“We will also take race day registrations,” Nelson said. “Sometimes people wait to see what the weather is going to do. But we run — rain or shine.”

The race begins at the fire station at 9 a.m., with registration beforehand beginning at 8 a.m.

There will be a pancake breakfast at the fire station after the race at about 9:30, which is free to those who enter the 5k and costs $3 for those who don’t.
