Summer Reading is here! This year, readers will explore all things musical as the Bertha Bartlett Public Library and the Gilbert Library present “Libraries Rock” during their summer library program. The 2018 Summer Reading Program is open to all ages, from babies to adults. We have a great line-up of special programs and prizes this summer, including tickets to the I-Cubs and the Blank Park Zoo and gift cards to area restaurants.
Our rock star summer programming kicks off on June 12 with a Hamilton Throwdown for Teens and runs through the end of July. Here is the line-up:
• Bertha B’s Teens, Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
• Tween Team, Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.
• Story County Tween Book Club, Wednesdays, Story City at 11:30 a.m., Gilbert at 1 p.m.
• Preschool Storytime in Gilbert, Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
• Kids Of Our Library (KOOL), Thursdays, Story City at 1 p.m., Gilbert at 3 p.m.
• Preschool Storytime in Story City, Fridays at 10:30 a.m.
Storyteller and comedian Will Stuck will present “Rumpus: Musical Mayhem & Tuneful Tales” for kids of all ages on June 14 at 1 p.m. in Story City and 3 p.m. in Gilbert. We are excited to have the Science Center of Iowa bring their “Global Soundscapes” program to teach us how to listen to the earth’s music on June 28 at 1 p.m. in Story City and 3 p.m. in Gilbert.
On July 5, Marcus MacIntosh of KCCI will be reading during our KOOL program and kids will receive a delicious cookie from local cookie baker Lisa Britton. Our final special program for kids will be on July 19 when Duke Otherwise brings his zany musical storytelling to the library. Both of these programs are presented at 1 p.m. in Story City and 3 p.m. in Gilbert.
Story City native Marj Charlier will be in town on June 16 to facilitate our writers’ workshop, “Rock Your Book.” Participants will learn how to prepare their manuscripts, find an independent publisher and market their books. Our early-bird registration (up to June 14) fee is $10; $15 after June 14.
