STORY CITY - Playing in its third game in four days, the No. 10 (Class 3A) Roland-Story girls’ basketball team was a little flat in a makeup game versus Greene County Monday.

The Norse took awhile to get going on offense and they were inconsistent throughout the game. But thanks to tough defense and some timely spurts, they still had no problem pulling away for a 40-24 victory.

“It was really a team effort — pushing through it together,” Roland-Story guard Madeline Morton said. “We have a had a lot of games in a number of days, but playing for each other just really helped us pull through.”

Roland-Story had 11 players put points on the board.

Jordyn Ramus provided the biggest spark for the Norse.

A Reece Johnson 3-pointer had given the Norse a 6-5 lead, but they were still struggling when Ramus drained a long 3 in the final minute of the first quarter. Susie Weaver quickly followed with another trey and Roland-Story was off and running, building a 22-6 lead by the middle of the second quarter.

“When someone hits something, then someone else will hit another,” Ramus said. “I feel like when we all play in a rhythm as a team, we can all get shots when we need it.”

Morton ended the 19-1 spurt with a pair of 3-pointers. She finished with a team-high eight points — all coming in the first half — and added four steals.

Ramus tallied six points, and Weaver and Reagan Barkema five apiece. Weaver also dished out four assists.

Johnson and Madison Martindale each scored four points for Roland-Story. Amy Rathmacher contributed five rebounds and Juliann Clark four steals.

Defensively, the Norse came together to hold Greene County to seven field goals. They also compiled 13 steals.

“Our defense is really solid,” Morton said. “We all connect really well on defense. Being able to trust that your teammate is there if you get beat or if you’re put in a bad situation is just really nice to have.”

Roland-Story improved to 15-5 overall and 10-3 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. The Norse will wrap up the regular season tomorrow at Saydel.

Greene County fell to 1-19 overall and 1-12 in the conference. Bri Habben scored a game-high nine points for the Rams and Lily Muir added six points and rebounds apiece.
