STORY CITY - It may have taken a couple weeks, but Roland-Story is starting to answer a challenge made by head coach Darrin Berggren.

The Norsemen held off a late comeback attempt by Greene County for a 70-61 victory Feb. 4 at Story City.

The victory was Roland-Story’s third in a row and fourth in five games after upsetting then No. 7 (Class 3A) Gilbert, 68-57, on Jan. 25.

“Coach Berggren challenged us to be the most-improved team after the (Christmas) break,” Roland-Story’s Kade Faga said. “I think that definitely hit home.”

Faga was huge for Roland-Story against Greene County.

Greene County had cut Roland-Story’s 15-point lead at the half to 64-61 on a three-point play by Trey Hinote with 1:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Rams got the ball back with a chance to tie, but Cael Fisher was called for traveling along the baseline with 43 seconds left.

Roland-Story got the ball, ran some clock and then Faga got open on the wing. Instead of trying to keep the ball moving to eat more clock, he decided to fire a 3-pointer.

It turned out Faga had ice water in his veins as the ball went through the net with 23 seconds left and he quickly pumped his fist in celebration.

“That was a pretty fun moment, I’d say,” Faga said. “I was pretty glad to hit that one.”

Roland-Story made a stand on Greene County’s next possession and Dylan Ihle hit 1 of 2 free throws for the Norsemen with 13 seconds left. Roland-Story made another stop and Dylan Ihle closed out the win by nailing two free throws with nine second left, putting the Norsemen at 9-10 on the season and 6-7 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Faga led Roland-Story with 24 points. He made five of Roland-Story’s 13 3-pointers and also handed out five assists.

“My teammates definitely set up a lot of those,” Faga said. “I felt like my teammates definitely put me in good positions.”

Ihle scored 12 points, and Ben Chelsvig and Carter Greenfield each scored 10 for the Norsemen. Chelsvig also ripped down 12 rebounds and he hit four clutch free throws in a row from the 2:39 to 1:50 mark in the fourth quarter to help Roland-Story maintain a two-possession cushion with a six-point lead.

“It’s the little things we work on every day in practice,” Chelsvig said. “I just try to go out there and give my best every time for my team. I love doing all the hard work — it’s fun.”

Greene County fell to 7-14 overall and 3-9 in the conference. Hinote was a force with 31 points in a losing effort.

Carter Morton added 11 points and five rebounds, Tyler Miller eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks and Nick Breon seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.
