PTO Can/Bottle Recycling Day
The Roland-Story PTO will be holding their next Can/Bottle Recycling Day on Saturday, April 13. Funds raised will be used to pay for pre-kindergarten to eighth-grade field trips and other support of Roland-Story schools. Donations can be dropped off north of the Story Community Center at 503 Elm Ave. now through 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13. The Roland-Story PTO greatly appreciates the support of our community residents and businesses for their donations for this project.
Touch of Grace concert
The Grace United Methodist Church Touch of Grace Bells will perform a concert in their church sanctuary (624 Elm Ave.) at 2 p.m. on Palm Sunday, April 14. Their program will feature a variety of familiar hymns showcasing fun and unique hand bell and chime playing techniques. As an additional treat, The Brethren, a local men’s a cappella gospel quartet will appear as special guests. The concert is the first in 20 years for the hand bell choir which originated at Christmas in 1976. And yes, a couple of the original bell musicians continue to perform with the group along with several veterans of 10+ years and newer members as well! Admission to the concert is by free-will offering. A time of coffee, baked goodies and conversation will follow in Fellowship Hall.
Gourmet Pizza Workshop
Becky Ringsby of Savor Specialty Chef Services will be presenting a free gourmet pizza workshop at the Roland Library on Sunday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m. Learn new pizza recipes and how to achieve wood-fired pizza results in your own oven. In addition to shared recipes and tips there will also be two different pizzas available for sampling. Please let the library know if you’ll be attending by calling (515) 388-4086.
Live Healthy Iowa 5K
The Story City GCC will once again be teaming up with Live Healthy Iowa to host the Live Healthy Iowa 5K in Story City on Saturday, April 13. Get registered today visiting www.livehealthyiowa.org/livehealthy-5K.
• American Legion Post 307 is serving homemade tenderloins on FRIDAY, APRIL 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at G.I. Jill’s, 207 N. Main St., Roland.
• On SATURDAY, APRIL 13, Sneaky Pete band will perform at the Peer Support Foundation dinner and fundraiser. Dinner will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with a menu of maidrites, baked beans, macaroni salad and chips for a free-will donation. The event will include a live auction, 50/50 and door prizes. The band will play at 8 p.m.
Utility Board meeting
The Board of Trustees of the Story City Municipal Electric Utility will hold its next regular board meeting on Monday, April 15, at 4 p.m. at the distribution building located at 11820 567th Ave., Story City.
Stitch ‘n’ Knit
Stitch ‘n’ Knit meets at Bertha Bartlett Public Library at 10 a.m. every Friday. If you knit, crochet or stitch anything by hand, come enjoy an hour of fellowship with other crafters. Remember to bring a project to keep your hands busy.
At 1 p.m. on Friday, April 12, at the Story City Community Center, people age 55 and over are invited to play bridge club and/or the card game “Hand and Foot.” No reservations or charge required, but a snack to share is appreciated.
On Wednesday, April 17, a Fellowship luncheon will be at 11 a.m. at the Story City Community Center. The cost is $4 per person age 55 and over. The delicious meals are catered by Story City Market’s deli. A monthly menu and contact information can be picked up at the center. Bring your own table service or buy supplies for 25 cents. The event offers great food, fellowship and bingo. Reservations can be made by calling Ruby Olson at (515) 733-9278.
The blockbuster hit “Captain Marvel” will be held over Friday, Saturday, Sunday, April 12, 13, 14, at the Story Theater in Story City. Easter Egg Hunt
Story City’s annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held Saturday, April 20, at 10 a.m. at the soccer fields on Holm Avenue, behind American Packaging. Sponsored by the Greater Chamber Connection, egg hunts will be broken into several age groups. There will also be games for all ages. The event will be held rain or shine. Be sure to arrive early because the hunt will begin right at 10 a.m.
Annual Tree Sale
Story City Trees Forever is holding its 23rd annual Tree Sale on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at the former Lone Tree Nursery site. Each tree will be $45 and must be planted within the city limits of Story City.
The City of Roland will hold their annual 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, April 27, at 9 a.m. at the Roland-Story Middle school. All interested in participating in this years run can down load the application on the Roland City Web-site: cityofroland.org. The Roland Kiwanis club will put on a pancake breakfast, which will be free to all participants and available to the public for a free will donation. The proceeds from this event will go towards the new Roland pool. Mayor Andrew Webb said he is looking forward to a record turn out for this years run, considering the amazing support given by the community in the March bond vote. In fact, the mayor plans to participate. Surely you can out run the Mayor — stated Webb. If he can do it, anyone can.
World-class bluegrass and gospel entertainers Monroe Crossing will appear in concert at the Story Theater Grand Opera House in Story City on Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. This will be the third time Monroe Crossing has appeared at the historical theater in Story City. Tickets are now on sale at the Story Theater, 512 Broad St., and the Story City Greater Chamber Connection, 524 Broad St., during each location’s regular business hours (other ticket purchasing arrangements can also be made). General admission tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the door the night of the concert. Doors open 30 minutes prior to the show.
