World-class bluegrass and gospel entertainers Monroe Crossing will appear in concert at the Story Theater Grand Opera House in Story City on Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. This will be the third time Monroe Crossing has appeared at the historical theater in Story City. Tickets are now on sale at the Story Theater, 512 Broad St., and the Story City Greater Chamber Connection, 524 Broad St., during each location’s regular business hours (other ticket purchasing arrangements can also be made). General admission tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the door the night of the concert. Doors open 30 minutes prior to the show. City-Wide Garage Sales
The Story City Greater Chamber Connection is hosting Spring City-Wide Garage Sales on Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4. Maps are available at: It’s Sew Tempting, Tin Chandler, Story City Floral, NuCara, True Value, Simply Mae’s, Antiques Iowa, and Story City GCC office. The GCC will also be having a garage sale at the office, including T-shirts, unique street decor and more, on Friday only from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
May the 4th Be With You on Free Comic Book Day
This year the stars have aligned and both Free Comic Book Day and Star Wars Day happen to fall on the same day, and the Roland Public Library will be recognizing both!
On Saturday, May 4, Free Comic Book Day begins at the library at 10 a.m. and goes until 1 p.m. Stop in and pick up the hottest issues of popular comic books, sponsored by Mayhem Comics of Ames. Supplies are limited, so the earlier you stop in the better! While you’re at it, check out our selection of graphic novels.
The Star Wars Celebration will begin at 11 a.m. in the programming room of the library and wrap up around noon. Join us for an hour of Star Wars activities, crafts and yummy goodies too! Peruse the library’s large selection of Star Wars books before you leave. Costumes are welcome for this event, but certainly not required. This free program is for kids of all ages!

Story City Trees Forever is holding a community tree planting on Saturday, May 4, at 9 a.m. Volunteers will meet north of the library in the boulevard of the 700 block of Park Avenue. The project needs several adults to go along with small groups to give guidance on the proper way to plant trees. Also a pair of volunteers are needed to tie up the trees after they are planted. There will be a tree planting demonstration at the beginning of the event, and refreshments will be available at the starting area during the entirety of the tree planting. Story City American Legion Post 59 will hold a Taco Feed tonight (Wednesday, May 1) from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Play Bargo at G.I. Jill’s on Monday, May 6. Games are free to play and the fun begins at 6:30 p.m.
Touch A Truck
The GCC’s annual Touch A Truck event will be held Thursday, May 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. in downtown Story City. Several trucks and other vehicles will be on display for all ages to enjoy. There is no cost for this event. The Story City EDC will be grilling hot dogs for kids to enjoy.
Stitch ‘n’ Knit
Stitch ‘n’ Knit meets at Bertha Bartlett Public Library at 10 a.m. every Friday. If you knit, crochet or stitch anything by hand, come enjoy an hour of fellowship with other crafters. Remember to bring a project to keep your hands busy.
At 1 p.m. on Friday, May 3, at the Story City Community Center, people age 55 and over are invited to play bridge club and/or the card game “Hand and Foot.” No reservations or charge required, but a snack to share is appreciated.
On Wednesday, May 8, a Fellowship luncheon will be at 11 a.m. at the Story City Community Center. The cost is $4 per person age 55 and over. The delicious meals are catered by Story City Market’s deli. A monthly menu and contact information can be picked up at the center. Bring your own table service or buy supplies for 25 cents. The event offers great food, fellowship and bingo. Reservations can be made by calling Ruby Olson at (515) 733-9278.
The DC Comics hit “Shazam” will be shown Friday, Saturday, Sunday, May 3, 4, 5, at the Story Theater in Story City. Shows are evenings at 7 p.m., with special Saturday and Sunday matinees also at 4:15 p.m. Admission is only $4 and it’s rated PG-13. For more information, call (515) 733-4551.
