ADEL — The Roland-Story softball team suffered three losses to larger and more powerful programs at the Tiger Invitational Friday and Saturday.


The Norse came up short against an Adel-Desoto-Minburn team rated No. 1 in Class 4A by an 8-1 score on Friday in six innings. On Saturday, they fell to traditional 4A power Winterset by a 6-0 score and 5A school Ankeny Centennial, 12-0 in three innings, to put their record at 3-8 on the season.


In Friday’s loss to ADM, the Norse were held to three hits and they had five errors. Roland-Story scored its only run in the top of the sixth and ADM scored three times in the first, once in the second and four times in the fifth.


Susie Weaver singled and scored, Madison Geise doubled and Emily Berggren singled. Geise took the loss after giving up six earned runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in six innings.


Aliya Yanga had 13 strikeouts as the winning pitcher for ADM. Brylee Person doubled twice and drove in two runs for the Tigers.


Roland-Story was hurt by five more errors in the setback against Winterset. The Norse totaled four hits and Geise gave up seven, going all six innings on the mound.


Berggren, Geise, Macy Friest and Reagan Schmitz each had a single for Roland-Story. The only Norse run came in the second inning courtesy of Kaylee Birkland, who was driven in by Olivia Heithoff.


Geise struck out two and walked three, giving up three earned runs in a losing effort. Madison Berns struck out seven and walked one in seven innings as the victorious Winterset pitcher and Jena Young was 3-for-4 with a double and a run for the Huskies at the plate.


Roland-Story didn’t find any success against Ankeny Centennial pitcher Sam Klug. Klug tossed a perfect game with two strikeouts in the shortened affair.


Ankeny Centennial broke the game open early, scoring nine times in the first inning. Franie Burnett was 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs and Cassie Severson 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for the Jaguars on offense.


Samantha Ellsberry gave up seven runs — just two earned — with one strikeout in ⅓ of an inning as the losing Roland-Story pitcher. Emma Schnurstein surrendered three runs on four hits in ⅔ of an inning and Geise allowed two unearned runs on four hits in 1 ⅓ innings.

JEWELL — Roland-Story had trouble getting on base in an 8-1 loss at South Hamilton June 6.


The Norse were limited to two hits and only three runners reached via a walk. They scored their only run in the top of the fourth inning after South Hamilton had built a 6-0 lead.


South Hamilton scored four times in the second inning and twice in the third. They added one run in both the fourth and fifth frames.


Madison Geise singled and drove in a run and Allisyn Coghlan also singled for Roland-Story’s only hits. Susie Weaver scored the lone Norse run.


Geise took the loss after allowing six earned runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts and only one walk in six innings.


Roland-Story fell to 3-5 overall and 1-5 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. South Hamilton improved to 8-2 and 5-1 respectively.


Taylor Volkmann was the winning South Hamilton pitcher. Volkmann struck out nine and walked three in seven innings.


Jessi Harms was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Breanne Diersen went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to pace South Hamilton on offense.

ROLAND — Roland-Story snapped a four-game losing skid and picked up its first Heart of Iowa Conference victory of the year in dramatic fashion with a 6-5 home win over Greene County June 5.


The Norse rallied for the win with a big sixth inning. Greene County had built a 5-0 lead, but Roland-Story plated all six of its runs in the bottom of the sixth.


Madison Geise then blanked Greene County in the top of the seventh to finish the comeback. Roland-Story improved to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in the HOIC.


Geise gave up just one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk, going all seven innings. She was able to overcome four Norse errors on defense.


Reagan Schmitz was 3-for-3 with a run, Reagan Faber 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, Macy Friest 2-for-2 with a double and a run and Susie Weaver 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run for Roland-Story on offense. Emily Berggren added a double and an RBI and Lydia Oetker and Kaylee Birkland each scored a run.


Megan Carey was 2-for-4 with two runs and Karissa Stephenson 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Greene County on offense. Jenna Beyers was the losing Ram pitcher, surrendering four runs on four hits and a walk in ⅓ of an inning.

GILBERT — Roland-Story was hurt by a lack of consistency at the plate and defensive mistakes in a 7-0 loss at Gilbert June 3.


The Norse collected six hits to Gilbert’s eight. But they could never string anything together and made three errors defensively, falling to 2-4 on the season and 0-4 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.


Gilbert scored twice in the first inning and five times in the fourth.


Emily Berggren doubled and Susie Weaver, Reagan Faber, Madison Geise, Macy Friest and Dana Vinson each had a single for Roland-Story. Geise was the losing pitcher after giving up seven earned runs with seven strikeouts and two walks in six innings.


Halli Nissen got the win for Gilbert. She struck out three and didn’t give up a run, despite allowing six walks and five hits in five innings.


Bella Nelson homered and drove in four runs and Emma Mostek went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run for Gilbert at the plate.
