Rich Olive golf tourney


The Rich Olive Memorial Golf Tournament will be held June 15 at River Bend Golf Course, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. or 1 p.m. The tournament is an 18-hole, four-person best shot, with an entry fee of $50 per person, which includes lunch and golf. Proceeds from the tournament will be donated to both the Bliss Cancer Center and River Bend.


Bertha Bartlett Public Library


•Tim Read, Cartoonist — Kids Of Our Library (KOOL) kicks off at Bertha Bartlett Public Library on June 13 at 1 p.m. We’ll have Cartoonist Tim Read tell stories as he draws. Then the kids will have their turn!


•A Universe of Stories — The 2019 Summer Reading program at Bertha Bartlett Public Library runs from June 1 to Aug. 20. We have programs and reading challenges for all ages! Come explore the universe with us all summer long!

Roland Farmers’ Market


The Roland Farmers’ Market will be held Thursday from 5-7 p.m. behind Casey’s.


Roland Public Library Summer Programming


On Thursday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m. the special program will be the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra Academy’s Out of This World String Petting Zoo. Kids will get to see, touch, and try out the instruments of the orchestra.


The library will also be making an appearance at the Roland Farmer’s Market on Thursdays at 5 p.m.


Vacation Bible School in Roland


Join your friends for a Community Bible School in Roland June 17-20. All children in the area are invited to this VBS, which will be staffed by Riverside Bible Camp and is sponsored by Bergen Lutheran Church and Salem Lutheran Church. Preschool and kindergarten will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Bergen; 1st through 6th grades will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Salem. The cost is $5 per child or a maximum of $10 per family. G.I. Jill’s


The Chasin’ Tails Bike Run will be June 15 with kickstands up at noon, starting at G.I. Jill’s, 207 N. Main St., Roland. Proceeds benefit the Story County Animal Shelter.

2x2xWho?


The annual public art project called 2x2xWho? is underway in Story City. Purchase your 2x2-foot canvas for $10 during June and July at the GCC office. Paint, stencil or decorate them. Return them to the GCC so they can be displayed anonymously during the month of August. Then vote for your favorite during the Progressive Dinner. Prizes will be awarded for first- and second-place in the adult and youth categories. The theme this year, is 2x2, and was inspired by Judge Story’s Theatrical Troupe’s production of “Children of Eden.”

Stitch ‘n’ Knit


Stitch ‘n’ Knit meets at Bertha Bartlett Public Library at 10 a.m. every Friday. If you knit, crochet or stitch anything by hand, come enjoy an hour of fellowship with other crafters. Remember to bring a project to keep your hands busy.


Play cards


At 1 p.m. on Friday, June 14, at the Story City Community Center, people age 55 and over are invited to play bridge club and/or the card game “Hand and Foot.” No reservations or charge required, but a snack to share is appreciated.


Fellowship luncheon


On Wednesday, June 19, a Fellowship luncheon will be at 11 a.m. at the Story City Community Center. The cost is $4 per person age 55 and over. The delicious meals are catered by Story City Market’s deli. A monthly menu and contact information can be picked up at the center. Bring your own table service or buy supplies for 25 cents. The event offers great food, fellowship and bingo. Reservations can be made by calling Ruby Olson at (515) 733-9278.

The box office hit “Detective Pikachu” will be shown Friday, Saturday, Sunday, June 14, 15, 16, at the Story Theater in Story City. Tenderloin dinner fundraiser


The Roland American Legion is holding a tenderloin fry on Friday, June 21, at G.I. Jill’s at 207 N. Main St. from 5 to 7 p.m. They will be helping Roland raise funds to replace the community pool. The meal will consist of a tenderloin, baked beans, potato chips, and applesauce. The cost is a free-will donation.


Broad Street Duck Race/BBQ on Broad


Story City’s annual Duck Race moves to Broad Street this year and will be held June 27 at 5:30 p.m. on Broad between Penn and Elm. Many great prizes will be available, and the $1,000 grand prize is sponsored by MBS Genetics. Ducks are $5 each or a “6 Quack” is $25. Sign up for your duck at any of the following locations: GCC office, Great Western Bank, Reliance State Bank, GNB Bank, NuCara and Security State Bank. The Duck Race will coincide with BBQ on Broad from 6 to 7:30 p.m., which will offer guests a $5 meal of a burger or hot dog, chips and a drink. There will be free games for kids. There will also be a Double or Nothing Bags Challenge for $1 and a Lutefisk Toss for $1. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets.


Bethany Life golf classic

Dress in your Sunday best for a fun afternoon of tea parties and story time at the Story City Antique Carousel on Sunday, June 23, at 3 p.m.


River Bend celebration


The public is invited to attend a dedication ceremony at River Bend Golf Course, Sunday, June 23, from 2-3 p.m. as it celebrates four years of fundraising to complete major upgrades to the course. Also special recognition will be given to those who have earned naming rights to seven of the cart paths.


Legion celebrates 100th year


Help the Story City American Legion celebrate 100 years of the Legion. The public is welcome to a chicken and sweet corn feed on June 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at North Park. The cost is a free-will donation. Carousel rides will be 2 for the price of one. Stay for music by Kenny Frette and Karen White from 1 to 3 pm. at the bandshell. Bring your chairs and enjoy. In case of muddy condition, the alternate location is the American Legion Hall.
